The University of Akron men's basketball team surpassed 20 wins for the fifth season in a row after defeating host Western Michigan 90-73 on Tuesday, Feb. 17 in Kalamazoo.
Senior Tavari Johnson scored 17 points and had six assists in 30 minutes as the Zips (21-5, 12-1) rolled past the Broncos (9-17, 3-10) to remain in second place in the Mid-American Conference standings behind Miami (26-0, 13-0). The RedHawks beat host Massachusetts 86-77 Tuesday.
Akron senior Evan Mahaffey finished with 14 points and five rebounds and senior Shammah Scott contributed 14 points and four assists. Zips senior Amani Lyles totaled 13 points, nine rebounds and three assists.

Akron shot 50% from the field (33 of 66), including 42.9% beyond the 3-point arc (12 of 28), and 75% from the free throw line (12 of 16). The Zips finshed with an edge in rebounds (43-27), assists (17-12), steals (6-1) and blocks (5-1).
Akron led 53-34 at halftime and 59-36 with 18:10 remaining in the second half after a dunk by Evan Mahaffey.
Zips senior Bowen Hardman and sophomore Sharron Young scored eight points apiece, redshirt freshman Eric Mahaffey chipped in seven points and redshirt sophomore Zach Halligan had six points.
Justice Williams paced Western Michigan with 21 points, six rebounds and six assists.
Akron coach John Groce has surpassed 20 wins in six of his nine seasons with the Zips. He followed Keith Dambrot, who recorded 21 or more wins in the final 12 seasons of his 13-year run as Akron coach.
Kent State recorded a 78-71 win over host Bowling Green on Tuesday, Feb. 17
Morgan Safford scored 27 points and grabbed seven rebound as to lead the Flashes (20-7, 11-3 MAC) past the Falcons (16-11, 7-7).
Kent's Cian Medley finished with 15 points and six assists, Delrecco Gillespie scored 11 points, Jahari Williamson and Quinn Woidke added eight points apiece and Rob Whaley Jr. had six points.
Javontae Campbell paced BG with 22 points and four assists.
