Yankees going all-in to trade for $32M Cy Young winner to form elite duo with Gerrit Cole originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The New York Yankees are starting to get back to full strength in their starting rotation. Young starter Cam Schlittler has been performing like a veteran.
This is his first full season in the MLB, and he has not disappointed the Yankees, especially while holding things down during Gerrit Cole’s injury absence. Schlittler is currently viewed as a favorite for the AL Cy Young Award.
“New York Yankees fans have to be excited about what they're seeing out of young starting pitcher Cam Schlittler right now. The 25-year-old doesn't look like he is in the middle of his first full season in the majors. Instead, he has looked like a 10-year veteran. Schlittler has made 11 starts so far this season and should be considered the favorite for the 2026 American League Cy Young Award,” SI’s Patrick McAvoy wrote.
Cole has since returned and looked sharp in his second start, still not allowing a run. He is showing signs of his vintage self.
“Gerrit Cole and his new right elbow will, in fact, allow a run at some point. It just has not happened yet through his first two starts back in the big leagues after Tommy John surgery. Cole looked very much like his vintage self Wednesday night in a dominant showing against the Royals, striking out 10 across 6 ²/₃ scoreless innings,” New York Post’s Greg Joyce wrote.
Even with the rotation performing at a high level, New York is still looking to add more pitching depth. A recent report suggests the Yankees will do whatever it takes to acquire Tarik Skubal.
“Now that it’s becoming inevitable that the free-falling Detroit Tigers may have no choice but to trade two-time Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal at the deadline, rival executives believe the bidding will come down to four finalists that not only can afford the remainder of his $32 million contract, but will also be willing to give up prized prospects: The Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Yankees, Toronto Blue Jays and San Diego Padres,” USA Today’s Bob Nightengale wrote.
Adding Skubal would give the Yankees a rotation that would be a nightmare for opposing lineups. Skubal is coming off an elbow injury, so there is optimism he will be as healthy as he has been all season.
Pairing Skubal with Cole in the rotation would be extremely difficult for opponents to handle. Alongside arms like Max Fried and Schlittler, it would give New York one of the best rotations in all of baseball.
