SULPHUR — The Ada High School baseball team simply couldn’t come up with a timely hit against the host Bulldogs Saturday night at the Sulphur Baseball Festival.
Ada dropped a 5-1 decision to the Bulldogs and saw its season-long 14-game winning streak come to an end. Sulphur improved to 13-4.
“Our coaching points this season thus far have been that this game is not easy. Eventually and inevitably you are going to have days where a pitcher gets you out and hitters hit you. That day came Saturday night at Sulphur,” Ada coach Shane Coker told The Ada News. “It was a really good game. We just never made the adjustments needed at the plate. Hopefully, we learned as much from that one loss as we have from most of our wins.”
The Cougars have already gained two more victories this week to move to 16-1 after Harding Charter forfeited two District 4A-1 matchups that were scheduled for Monday and today. Ada now treks to the Kingston Baseball Tournament and will meet Davis at 3 p.m. Thursday in a first-round game.
Coker said his team used Monday and today as big workout days.
“It’s not going to kill us to have a couple of good practices this week before the Kingston Tournament,” Coker said. “We have a few little injuries and have some guys that need reps swinging the bat and fielding.”
In another game at the Sulphur Festival, the Byng Pirates pushed past Washington 6-4. Coach Jake Wellington’s club improved to 12-1, while the Warriors dropped to 10-6.
The Pirates hosted Tecumseh Monday and travel to Tecumseh today for a pair of District 4A-1 matchups. Byng then heads to Kingfisher Friday for the 2025 Shed Classic Festival. The Pirates will face Perkins at 12:15 p.m. and the host Kingfisher Club at 4:45 p.m.
Sulphur 5, Ada 1
The Bulldogs were limited to four total hits but three of those came in the bottom of the fourth inning when Sulphur pushed across four runs. That inning also included an Ada error, a walk and a hit batter.
The Cougars had taken a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning but were left wanting more.
Brock Boyles walked to lead off the fourth and Cade Stick followed with a base hit. Kyler Gaddis then laid down a nice bunt that turned into a base hit and Ada had the bases loaded with no outs.
Collin Christian then drew a walk to force in a run and leave the bases loaded still with no outs. But Sulphur relief pitcher Mike Morris struck out the next two batters he faced and an Ada baserunner was also thrown out at home. Ada stranded a total of eight runners in the contest.
Colten Cole gave Sulphur an insurance run when he led off the bottom of the sixth inning with a solo home run.
Cade “Big Papi” Stick led a six-hit Ada offense with a 3-for-3 outing. Gaddis finished 2-for-3 and Will Johnson had the other Ada hit.
JD Dugan walked twice and stole two bases for the visitors.
Sulphur managed just four total hits. Morris and Luke Linville both had hits and drove in runs for the home team and Cash Matlack went 1-for-2 with a walk and a run scored.
Morris picked up the pitching win in relief for the Bulldogs. He struck out four and walked one in four shutout innings. Carter Cole got the start for Sulphur. He struck out three, walked for and allowed one earned run in three innings.
Chalin Robertson, now 5-1 this spring, absorbed the loss for Ada. He struck out three, walked two and allowed two earned runs in four innings of work. Brock Boyles tossed the final two innings for the Cougars.
Byng 6, Washington 4
The Pirates were cruising right along, leading 6-0 after five complete innings.
The Warriors mounted a comeback bid in the bottom of the sixth inning. Washington scored four runs thanks to six walks — three with the bases loaded — and a sacrifice fly by J Mayes. Byng reliever Ezekiel Griffin finally closed out the game (via the time limit) when he got J Rico to ground out.
Byng got off to a quick start offensively. Brody Airington led the game off with an infield single and Preston Welch followed with a base hit of his own. Kendon Wood walked to load the bases with no outs.
Airington scored on a balk call and Griffin then plastered a three-run homer over the left-field wall that put the Pirates on top 4-0.
Byng got RBI singles from Preston Tapia and Kix Stephens in the top of the third inning to push the lead to 6-0.
Byng starting pitcher Preston Welch got out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the first inning by striking out the side. He didn’t allow more than one base runner in any inning until Washington’s rally attempt in the bottom of the sixth. He struck out seven, walked six and allowed just two earned runs in 5.1 innings. He helped his cause with a 2-for-4 effort at the plate.
Stephens also had two of Byng’s seven total hits.
Washington didn’t have any hits until Yariel Bello’s single during the WHS sixth-inning surge.
Zeke Wilson was the starting pitcher for the Warriors. He struck out two, walked two and allowed four earned runs in 2.2 innings. LD Vinzant was solid in relief for Washington. He struck out four, walked one and allowed just one hit in 3.1 shutout innings.
