VfB Stuttgart underlined their Bundesliga top four ambitions with a convincing 4-0 victory over second last Wolfsburg on Sunday but rivals RB Leipzig remain on their heels with a 2-1 comeback win at SV Hamburg.
Deniz Undav opened the scoring for Stuttgart into the roof of the net from short range in the 21st after the ball fell kindly for the German international in a goalmouth scramble.
Jamie Leweling tapped the second at the far right post four minutes later and then fired into the top corner in the 42nd for a brace after an attempted Wolfsburg clearance.
Nikolas Nartey wrapped up matters in stoppage time in off the post against harmless visitors whose relegation fears are growing and the future of coach Daniel Bauer reportedly uncertain.
"We are playing great football," Leweling told streaming portal DAZN. "Wolfsburg are at the bottom I thought there would be a bit more from them. But we did a good job and claimed a convincing victory."
Stuttgart drew level on points with third placed Hoffenheim but Leipzig are breathing down their neck two points behind. Leipzig visit Stuttgart in a fortnight and host Hoffenheim a week later.
Bayer Leverkusen in sixth are another four points back but have a game in hand, a rearranged match on Wednesday in Hamburg.
A top four finish is needed to qualify for the next Champions League but fifth may also be enough as Germany is in the running for an additional slot.
Hamburg were unbeaten in six games and took the lead from Fabio Vieira in the 22nd after Leipzig's Castello Lukeba lost the ball.
Lukeba made up for his mishap in the 36th when he headed on to Romulo who with his back towards goal netted the equalizer with a backheeler through the legs of a defender and into the far corner.
Teenager Yan Diomande fired Leipzig ahead into the top corner after beating three defenders five minutes after the restart as the visitors took full control.
Romulo had a golden opportunity for a third after a Nicolai Remberg handball but Hamburg goalkeeper Daniel Heuer Fernandes saved the penalty on the hour. However, Leipzig held on against now harmless hosts to end of run of three games without victory.
"We could have clinched it earlier but we managed to turn around a game and win," Leipzig full back David Raum said.
Eintracht Frankfurt kept up their European hopes with a 2-0 victory over Freiburg who they leapfrogged into seventh place, six points behind Leverkusen. Seventh could be enough for a place in Europe in certain scenarios at the end of the season.
Fares Chaibi scored into the bottom right corner in the 64th shortly after coming on and then set up Jean-Matteo Bahoya to fire high into the net from a left angle in the 81st. But Frankfurt lost goalkeeper Kaua Santos early on what appeared to be a knee injury.
At the top, Bayern Munich are on title course as they moved 11 points clear of Borussia Dortmund after winning their table topper 3-2 on Saturday. Dortmund captain Emre Can ruptured the cruciate ligament in his left knee during the game and is out for months and the World Cup.
