Steve Kerr unveils Stephen Curry reason for Warriors NBA Playoffs push originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
No choice is left for the Golden State Warriors. They have to compete for a spot in the NBA Playoffs because of the record discrepancy between them and the New Orleans Pelicans who hold the 11th seed. A lot of fans have been clamoring for the team to tank and no longer let Stephen Curry play so that they'll get a higher draft pick but it is a bit too late for that. Coach Steve Kerr outlined why he thinks this will be the best for their team and the aging star.
Warriors know Curry wants to compete in the NBA Playoffs
Look, there is no easy way to say this but Stephen Curry is likely going to retire in the next few years. He just turned 38 years old and will likely get bogged down by either age or injuries. So, the Warriors are making the most out of their remaining time with the legendary sharpshooter. It is also why Coach Kerr wants his squad to keep fighting to get into the NBA Playoffs and might just refuse to sit Curry down if the superstar chooses to play, via Sam Amick of The Athletic.
"I don’t know. That’s not — not what we do. Just compete. That’s the job. And Steph’s in the final stages of his career. If he has a chance to be in the playoffs, he’s gonna want to compete, and our group’s gonna wanna too," the Warriors head coach said.
Even if the Warriors did choose to lose all of their matches. They only have six games left and the team below them are the Pelicans who have only won a meager 25 games. However, this squad may struggle quite a bit to hang with the top teams in the NBA Playoffs. Against teams who have a record above .500, the Warriors have only won 18 of their 51 matchups.
So, what will be their secret to winning. Well, it is to keep the NBA Playoffs games close and finish them in the clutch. The Warriors have been spectacular at winning close games. They have won five out of 10 games which were decided by three points or less. When expanded, the Warriors also win 20 out of their 42 matches when the lead entering the game is as close as 10 points. It will be a collective effort before Curry gets back and ready for the NBA Playoffs. Hopefully, Coach Kerr can scheme through committee so they can escape the NBA Play-In Tournament.
