Gregg Popovich is synonymous with winning. As a staple in the NBA community for nearly 40 years, Popovich got his start in the league as an assistant coach for the San Antonio Spurs in 1988. Popovich would take over the head coaching position for the Spurs ahead of the 1996-97 season.
Popovich, who has dealt with a multitude of health problems, officially retired from coaching in the NBA on Friday, walking away as the winningest coach in NBA history.
Popovich sits atop the NBA all-time wins list for coaches with 1,422 regular season victories after spending 29 seasons at the helm of the Spurs. He coached the likes of Tim Duncan, David Robinson, Tony Parker, and Manu Ginobili, leading his teams to five NBA championships.
He also coached now Golden State Warriors, head coach Steve Kerr for four seasons. Kerr spent two stints with the Spurs as a player from 1998-2001, and again in the 2002-03 season.
Kerr, who has a second consecutive, series-clinching game on his mind on Friday, took the time prior to his pregame press conference to make an emotional statement on Popovich's impact on him throughout his life and career.
Kerr showed up to his press conference with a "Thanks, Pop!" T-shirt and made a poignant, emotional statement on "Pop's" impact on him.
"I just want to say thank you to Pop and to the Spurs organization for everything they've meant to me in my career. I know this is a pretty emotional day for the Spurs and for the entire NBA. The number of coaches he's influenced in his career is incredible," Kerr said.

Kerr also expressed how influential Popovich has been throughout his career, not just in basketball, but in all aspects of life.
"Pop is one of the most important people in my life for many many reasons and most of them go way beyond basketball. It's a sad day...I've got a lot of mixed emotions today, but mainly just my love for Pop," Kerr expressed emotionally.
Kerr did start his press conference by saying "Pop" would call him "a hapless rube". Kerr then ended his Popovich statement with his full gratitude and love.
"Thank you, Pop! Love you and see you soon."
