The New England Patriots’ blockbuster June. 1 trade for A.J. Brown raised one primary question: how does the organization feel about a reunion with Stefon Diggs?
Of course, priority No. 1 was ensuring Brown joined the organization, which ultimately occurred at the perfect time. Moving forward, many will speculate about the chances of the Patriots pairing Brown with Diggs in 2026-27.
According to head coach Mike Vrabel, the odds aren’t in Diggs' favor.
“I think we (are) probably at the number that we would need right now,” Vrabel said Wednesday. “I wouldn’t say anything is off the table. We would want to add anybody that could help us. I’m not going to give a percentage on it, but I think we’re happy with where we’re at right now with the numbers and the people in the receivers’ room.”
“I appreciate Stefon as a person and as a player and what he did for us last year — I’ll value that. Helped us win football games. Helped us get to where we got. But right now, I don’t think that’s something that I think we’re exploring. But I would never say no.”
Vrabel’s feelings regarding Diggs spending another campaign with the Patriots aren’t overly surprising. On May. 28, Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer reported that if New England hit the jackpot with Brown, it would be unlikely for them to bolster their receiving room further by signing Diggs.
Diggs finished his first and only season with the Patriots with 85 receptions for 1,013 yards and four touchdowns, helping New England return to the Super Bowl for the first time since 2019 (toward the end of the Tom Brady era).
If Vrabel and the Patriots truly feel confident with their current receiving core (Brown, Romeo Doubs, Kayshon Boutte, and Mack Hollins), it wouldn’t be logical for them to pursue Diggs on the free agent market.
