The Pittsburgh Steelers have reportedly signed tight end Darnell Washington to a four-year extension.
ESPN NFL insider Jeremy Fowler reported on Wednesday evening that the Steelers and Washington agreed to a four-year, $42 million deal that includes $21 million guaranteed.
Pittsburgh selected Washington in the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft out of Georgia and he’s been a key part of the offense. Washington is a huge part of the run game as a blocker, but he’s also gotten better as a pass catcher as of late.
During OTAs, new Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy also had plenty of praise for McCarthy.
“Love Darnell," McCarthy said on Tuesday. "He's been here every day, classroom, good student. He's a pros pro. I've been very, very impressed with him. ... Year 1, as you get to know your players, there's certain schemes you may tilt one way or the other, variations of schemes. And definitely we've been doing that with our tight ends, and he's a big part of that reason.”
Washington recorded 31 receptions for 364 yards and a touchdown in 16 games, including 13 starts for the Steelers last season.
Washington is part of a Steelers’ tight end group that features Pat Freiermuth as the projected starter, while Jaheim Bell and JJ Galbreath are likely competing for the final tight end roster spot.
The Steelers will open their 2026 NFL season on Sept. 13 at home against the Atlanta Falcons in Week 1.
