The Pittsburgh Steelers have been busy locking up that talented 2023 NFL draft class this week. First, it was edge defender Nick Herbig, and now it is tight end Darnell Washington. According to multiple sources including ESPN NFL reporter Jeremy Fowler, Washington and the Steelers have agreed to terms on a four-year contract extension worth $42 million with $21 million of that guaranteed.

This contract almost matches the four-year, $48 million contract fellow Steelers tight end Pat Freiermuth signed in 2024. Washington is a fan favorite and dominant run blocker who makes the most of every catch he makes thanks to his massive frame.

With Washington and Herbig signed, attention no turns to cornerback Joey Porter Jr. Like the other two, Porter Jr. is part of that 2023 draft class and has far outplayed his rookie contract. We expected Porter to be the first of the draft class to get a big raise and honestly assumed Washington would have to wait until the end of the year to see what the market had for him before getting an offer from Pittsburgh.

Washington caught 31 passes for 364 yards in 2025. He had one receiving touchdown and two fumbles.
