Historically speaking, the Pittsburgh Steelers have had some of the best safeties in NFL history. Donnie Shell, Carnell Lake, Rod Woodson and Troy Polamalu are all historic talents. ESPN polls NFL executives, coaches and scouts to rank the 10 best safeties in the NFL for 2026. No current of past Steelers made the top 10 but two players did get votes.
Among current Steelers, Jalen Ramsey got some votes despite only switching to safety at the midway point of the season. Ramsey got off to a hot start as the team's free safety before cooling off down the stretch. This season, Ramsey isn't even slated to play safety and will be more of a slot cornerback/linebacker in Patrick Graham's new defense.
Also receiving votes is former Steeler Minkah Fitzpatrick. Fitzpatrick was considered one of the best safeties in the NFL during his tenure in Pittsburgh after the Steelers traded for him. Fitzpatrick currently plays for the New York Jets after two stints with the Miami Dolphins and six seasons with the Steelers.
