When the Pittsburgh Steelers went on the clock in the third round of the 2025 NFL draft, the analysts on the television broadcasts were screaming from the rooftops for the Steelers to select former Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders. However, the Steelers didn't pay any attention to that. Instead, the Steelers stuck to the plan and used their third-round pick on former Iowa running back Kaleb Johnson.
After the pick, Pittsburgh offensive coordinator Arthur Smith addressed the media and, with just three words, told us exactly why Johnson was the pick and perhaps why Sanders wasn't. Smith said he was a "great culture fit" in reference to Johnson. This follows head coach Mike Tomlin noting that first-round pick Derrick Harmon had "Steelers DNA," which made him too good to pass up.
It's clear the Steelers are leaning in hard on character and fit with team culture and working to avoid players who could potentially be distractions and not put the team first. Is this Sanders? It's not for us to say but we can say that with four picks on Sunday, we expect the Steelers to continue to look for guys of high character and who fit the team in more ways than just their skills on the field.
