When the Pittsburgh Steelers went on the clock in the third round of the 2025 NFL draft, many felt like this had to be the time for them to take a quarterback, whether it was Shedeur Sanders or Jalen Milroe. But nope, Pittsburgh stayed the course, stuck to the plan and instead opted for former Iowa running back Kaleb Johnson.

What does Johnson bring to the Steelers? Incredible production, ball security, exceptional vision, breakaway speed and a true No. 1 running back. In 2024, Johnson accounted for 1,725 yards and 23 touchdowns. The Iowa team scored 40 offensive touchdowns so you understand just how much of the offense he was.

Going further, Johnson was second in the country with 861 breakaway yards and fourth in the country with 1,060 yards after contact.

Where does Johnson fit with the Steelers? The one downside of Johnson's game was his lack of use in the passing game. This includes pass pro. For that reason, he's going to start his career as an early-down back and Jaylen Warren will be the Steelers guy on third down. In fact, we assume Warren is going to be the lead back to start the year, with Johnson there to spell him and we can expect to see his workload increase gradually as the season goes on.
