The Pittsburgh Steelers and new head coach Mike McCarthy have begun building the coaching staff for the 2026 offseason, and it appears the team could have its eye on a former teammate of pending free-agent quarterback Aaron Rodgers to be the offensive coordinator.

According to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, Pittsburgh plans to interview New Orleans Saints quarterbacks coach Scott Tolzien for its vacant offensive coordinator position.

"The Steelers have notified the Saints that they plan to interview assistant Scott Tolzien for offensive coordinator, per sources," Fowler reported on X. "Tolzien was a Mike McCarthy quarterback in Green Bay and assistant in Dallas. He coached Saints quarterbacks Tyler Shough this year."

Tolzien played in the NFL for eight years, including three seasons with McCarthy, Rodgers, and the Green Bay Packers from 2013 to 2015.

Since retiring from football in 2019, Tolzien has gotten into coaching. He started as an analyst for Wisconsin in the college ranks, but moved to the NFL to work with McCarthy with the Dallas Cowboys in 2023.

Tolzien served in the Cowboys' coaching staff for two seasons and was Dallas' quarterbacks coach in 2024.

In 2025, after McCarthy was let go by the team, Tolzien went to New Orleans and played an instrumental role in rookie quarterback Tyler Shough's development. Shough showed a ton of promise during his rookie year in 2025.

Tolzien and McCarthy have a strong working relationship, so it would make sense for the rising offensive coach to join the Steelers. Tolzien is also familiar with Rodgers, which could give the future Hall of Fame signal-caller another reason to stay in Pittsburgh for one more season.
