The Pittsburgh Steelers underwent a massive identity change over the past month, with defensive-minded Mike Tomlin stepping down and Mike McCarthy emerging as the new head coach.

Heading into uncharted waters, there are several defensive players the Steelers could target in free agency — particularly cornerback Nahshon Wright of the Chicago Bears, who could help ease Pittsburgh’s transition into a new era.

Stats

  • 2021 (13 games): 0 interceptions, 0 passes defended, 9 combined tackles
  • 2022 (7 games): 1 interception, 4 passes defended, 23 combined tackles
  • 2023 (12 games): 0 interceptions, 1 pass defended, 5 combined tackles
  • 2024 (1 game): 0 interceptions, 0 passes defended, 0 combined tackles
  • 2025 (17 games): 5 interceptions, 11 passes defended, 80 combined tackles

Fit with Steelers defense

With Asante Samuel Jr. and James Pierre set to become free agents in March, the Steelers would be in desperate need of a solidified CB2 opposite Joey Porter Jr. — which is where Wright comes into play.

Recording a league-high eight takeaways, 11 passes defended, and 80 combined tackles in what can only be described as a breakout 2025 season, Wright is riding a lot of momentum heading into Year 6 and could help take Pittsburgh’s secondary to the next level.

Contract prediction:

Considering Wright's Spotrac-projected average annual value of $16.6 million, we at Steelers Wire predict he'll sign a three-year deal worth $51 million.
