The Pittsburgh Steelers have plenty of roster needs to address in the upcoming free agency period, particularly at safety, where there are a few key names to watch closely.

Currently, the Steelers have Jalen Ramsey and potentially DeShon Elliott atop the safety depth chart, but Bryan Cook of the Kansas City Chiefs would make an ideal acquisition for Pittsburgh’s defense.

Stats

2022 (16 games): 0 interceptions, 2 passes defended, 33 combined tackles2023 (12 games): 1 interception, 2 passes defended, 42 combined tackles2024 (17 games): 2 interceptions, 5 passes defended, 78 combined tackles2025 (17 games): 0 interceptions, 6 passes defended, 85 combined tackles

Fit with Steelers defense

With Chuck Clark and Kyle Dugger scheduled to hit free agency in March, as well as questions surrounding Elliott's availability after missing most of the 2025 season with a knee injury, Cook would pair nicely with Ramsey as Pittsburgh's starting safety duo.

One of the league's top safeties last season against both the run and the pass, Cook possesses a versatile skill set that allows him to line up in the box, at nickel, or as the deep safety, which could help Pittsburgh's secondary rebound in a big way in 2026.

Contract prediction

We at Steelers Wire predict Cook, projected by Spoctrac to command an average annual value of $14.2 million, could sign a four-year, $60 million contract in free agency.
