The Pittsburgh Steelers underwent a massive identity change over the past month, with defensive-minded Mike Tomlin stepping down as head coach — which may have been for the best, considering their defensive collapse in 2025.
Heading into uncharted waters, there are several defensive players the Steelers could target in free agency, particularly safety Kamren Curl of the Los Angeles Rams, who could help ease Pittsburgh’s transition into the new era.
2020: 88 combined tackles, 4 tackles for loss, 2.0 sacks, three interceptions, four passes defended2021: 99 combined tackles, 2 tackles for loss, 1.0 sack, zero interceptions, five passes defended2022: 83 combined tackles, 6 tackles for loss, 1.0 sack, zero interceptions, zero passes defended2023: 115 combined tackles, 3 tackles for loss, 1.0 sack, zero interceptions, five passes defended2024: 79 combined tackles, 1 tackle for loss, 1.0 sack, zero interceptions, nine passes defended2025: 122 combined tackles, 2 tackles for loss, 2.0 sacks, two interceptions, five passes defended
Curl, who has 86 games of starting experience in six seasons, would be a more than welcome addition to Pittsburgh's defense, considering both Kyle Dugger and Chuck Clark are set to become free agents next month.
A versatile defensive back with underrated coverage abilities, as well as emerging as one of the league's best run-stopping safeties, Curl could play a massive role in the potentially new-look defense.
To sign Curl, a top free-agent safety this offseason, the Steelers would likely need to offer a three-year deal worth $39 million.
