Pittsburgh Steelersdefensive tackle Cameron Heyward is quietly sitting out team drills at training camp while he holds in looking for a raise despite signing a contract extension in the 2024 offseason. This news came out on Thursday and it has squarely divided the fanbase. Many fans have sided with Heyward and believe the team should re-work his deal, even though it's only a year old and the rest feel like he's being paid fairly and he needs to honor his contract.
All this prompted Heyward to make a viral post on Instagram with a rather cryptic message. "When you take things for granted, the thing you are granted get taken."
Our interpretation of this is that Heyward feels like the organization is taking him for granted and to some degree, he was taken advantage of when he signed his contract coming off of an injury-riddled season. Heyward signed a two-year, $29 million extension in September 2024. He followed it up with a massive 2024 campaign and he proved all the doubters wrong who thought he would never come back and play like his former self.
Heyward is hoping to use his success in 2024 to remind the front office what he's capable of and that the team will reward him as he was probably underpaid last season. Giving Heyward an extension with two years left on his contract goes against everything the Steelers do in contract negotiations.
