Right after the Pittsburgh Steelers selected Oregon defensive tackle Derrick Harmon with the 21st overall pick in Thursday night's first round of the NFL Draft, Steelers coach Mike Tomlin used two words to explain why Harmon was the pick.
"Extreme urgency," Tomlin stated.
That's a bold offering. But we get it.
"To be quite honest with you,'' Tomlin continued, "there's no substitute for young talent. You don't have a chance to fill a quality defense unless you're stout inside and up front. And this is a young guy that has an opportunity to learn from the likes of Cam Heyward and put his hand in that pile — and be a significant contributor for years to come."
The Steelers will now look to change their identity on defense - and their collected age - through the big defensive tackle. Harmon could have in theory been gotten later in the first round had the Steelers opted to trade down, but Tomlin did not want to wait to get his man.
Some thought the Steelers were going to opt for a quarterback at 21 and select either Jaxson Dart or Shedeur Sanders, from Ole Miss and Colorado, respectively. However, the Steelers pulled the trigger on Harmon and will now have to wait and think about selecting a quarterback later in the draft.
Pittsburgh has two journeymen quarterback on the roster in Mason Rudolph and Skylar Thompson. General manager Omar Khan said Wednesday the Steelers will bring four quarterbacks to Latrobe for training camp, so it remains to be seen as to who the Steelers will add to the quarterback room.
That Aaron Rodgers thing, of course, still lingers.
The Steelers do not have a second-round pick due to the fact they traded it to the Seattle Seahawks to obtain the rights to wide receiver D.K. Metcalf.
