The Pittsburgh Steelers have been down this road before, failing to extend their star players before their respective markets explode. And that’s exactly what just happened, as Cleveland Browns cornerback Denzel Ward’s update made a future extension for Joey Porter Jr. even more expensive.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Browns have made Ward the highest-paid cornerback in the NFL following a two-year, $62.2 million deal.
Previously, the Steelers received bad news on a possible extension for Porter after it was reported that the New England Patriots were set to make Christian Gonzalez the highest-paid cornerback. But the Browns all but made it even more difficult with Ward’s extension, as Gonzalez will surely top his average annual value of $31.1 million.
Porter was projected by some to reset the cornerback market, but the Browns were the first of likely many teams to make a new deal extremely difficult.
To make matters worse, the Steelers have bigger concerns than contract talks when it comes to Porter, as the star cornerback was placed on the physically unable to perform list at training camp after he suffered a back injury.
