As the Pittsburgh Steelers prepare to kick off their preseason slate of games, veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers has cast doubt on whether he will suit up for August action.

Heading into his 22nd NFL season, and his second with Pittsburgh, the 42-year-old future Hall of Famer expressed skepticism regarding the benefits of taking live snaps before Week 1.

Reporting from Steelers training camp, beat writer Nick Farabaugh shared Rodgers’ perspective on X.

"Aaron Rodgers says he doesn't see much advantage in himself playing in preseason games,” posted Farabaugh on X. “He and Mike McCarthy will discuss if he will play this afternoon."

The conversation surrounding Rodgers' August workload is particularly intriguing given his history and his relationship with head coach Mike McCarthy. The pair, who previously won Super Bowl XLV together in Green Bay, reunited in Pittsburgh with an established baseline of operational trust.

While McCarthy has historically favored giving key starters reps to sharpen timing, Rodgers sees little upside in risking unnecessary injury contact during exhibition contests when practice reps offer low-risk chemistry building.

For a veteran entering the final chapter of his career, preserving health remains paramount. Rodgers did not play a single preseason snap last year and has rarely taken part in August exhibition action in recent seasons.

While running McCarthy’s scheme in live action could assist newer receiving targets in adjusting to his cadence, Rodgers maintains that team scrimmage sessions provide sufficient preparation.

Whether Rodgers suits up against his former team, the Green Bay Packers, hinges on his afternoon meeting with McCarthy. However, Rodgers’ initial stance underscores a clear priority: entering the regular season fully healthy far outweighs any temporary preseason gain.
