B-more had a historic D in 2000, but #1 ranked is #1 ranked.

No. Wrong again. A #1 ranked defense is NOT a #1 ranked defense...okay, that didn't sound right, but let me explain. By YOUR rationale, by exactly what you're saying, last year's Cowboy's defense is JUST AS GOOD as the best defenses of all time...the Bears in '85, the vaunted Ravens SB defense, the Steel Curtains, etc. I don't just disagree...you're WRONG. Just because a defense is ranked #1 in a given year, doesn't mean they are as good a defense as another defense from another season. Heck, I'd even wager certain defenses that finish #2 or 3 are better than some that finish #1 in other years.

And yes, thank you for backing off on the insult front. I didn't need to be 'called out'...I needed to be asked for more in-depth analysis. I didn't initially wish to spend a long time writing a huge message, but, being insulted, I did. Initially, I just gave my views. You decided my post was garbage out of sheer disagreement.

#1 in yardage. #2 in points. #3 against the run. #1 against the pass.

Oddly, they were 13th in the NFC in turnovers.
So I'm guessing their defense didn't score a lot... that's one stat I like to consider too. A defense that can change the entire game with a big play, score, and come back on the field to stop them again.

That's uncharacteristic of a Tuna D. I'll bet it changes this year--I'd put money that they end up in top-10 in turnovers.

Dallas will be a good team again just because of their outstanding defense, which should be credited to Dave Campo, not Parcells, but I doubt they make the playoffs. One Wild Card will come from the NFC South because they get to feast on the NFC West and the other will be either Green Bay, Minnesota, or St. Louis. Like last year, I don't think Dallas is good enough to surpass Philly. If they do manage to make the playoffs, they'll be one and done.

I agree with you that not all #1 defenses are the same. But the #1 defense in a certain year should be enough to elevate a team to the playoffs. As it did for the Cowboys last season, and the Bucs and Dolphins for a long, long time. A #1 defense combined with either a power running game (2000 Ravens) or a masterful passing game (2003 Pats) should be enough to get you to the Super Bowl. The Cowboys had a #1 defense and mediocre (in every sense of the word) offense. It was enough to drive them to the NFC Wild Card game.

In that game, they ran into a team with a Top 10 defense (#8 in the NFL) and a Top 10 rushing game (#7) in Carolina. They got ran over, as Stephen Davis rushed for 107 yards and both Muhammed and Smith went over 100 yards receiving.

I remember befre the season last year all the national sports folk were on the G-Men bandwagon. They all kept talking about how bad Dallas was and that they would be last in their division. I told JTthe Brick that The Giants were done because they had no O line(still don't, poor Eli, Hahahahaha). I explained that Dallas would finish 2nd and make the playoffs for the reason's K9 has stated, DEFENSE wins championships. Dallas's current D is not quite elite, but with some improvement to their D line they could be. The Injury to Woodson hurts, hopefully he can recover by the beginning of the season. Carter is a better QB than people think, he's just really erratic. He is a bit like McCown, great athlete, very good arm, needs to learn to not panic.
