Francisco Lindor is back. Whether that is enough to save the Mets' season is another question.

The Mets will activate their star shortstop off the injured list for the second game of a doubleheader on Wednesday, June 24 against the Cubs at Citi Field, manager Carlos Mendoza said. It will be Lindor's first big league game since April 22, when he strained his left calf.

It comes less than 24 hours after Juan Soto left Tuesday night's loss with left side back tightness. Soto was held out of the first game Wednesday and is considered day to day. Mendoza said the outfielder's back "locked up" on him during the game and that it hurt him to throw and swing. The Mets did not say if Soto had imaging and would not rule out a possible IL stint.

Lindor and Soto have been in the lineup together just nine times in 78 games this season.

Soto is hitting .299 with a .395 on-base percentage and a .965 OPS, with 17 home runs and 38 RBI in 61 games.

Lindor was scuffling before the injury, hitting .226 with a .355 slugging percentage, two home runs and five RBI.

The injuries have just piled up for the Mets this season. Outfielder Tyrone Taylor and shortstop Ronny Mauricio are still rehabbing at Syracuse. Infielder Jorge Polanco is expected back before the All-Star break. The pitching staff has lost Tylor Megill, Reed Garrett and Dedniel Nunez for the season, while Clay Holmes broke his right leg in May and isn't expected back until August.

The Mets entered Wednesday's games at 34-44 and last in the National League East.
