Rick Pitino added the last piece of the puzzle to the Red Storm’s roster, and fittingly, that piece came from overseas.
First reported by DraftExpress, Spanish wing Gildas Giménez has committed to St. John’s on Monday morning, becoming the 15th and final scholarship player for this upcoming season.
As a dual citizen of Burkina Faso and Spain, Giménez becomes the seventh international signing of the offseason for the Red Storm, joining Quinn Ellis (England), Djordije Jovanović (Montenegro), Lazar Stojković (Serbia), Babacar Sane (Senegal), Theo Edema (Nigeria), and Tounde Yessoufou (Benin).
Giménez experienced his best basketball representing his country on the youth circuit. He averaged 8.4 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 2.0 “stocks” (1.3 blocks and 0.7 steals per game) on 51.1% shooting to help Spain win the 2025 FIBA U18 EuroBasket. Two years prior, he was one of the leaders on Spain’s 2023 FIBA U16 EuroBasket-winning squad, ranking second in scoring with 14.4 points and 6.6 rebounds per game on 50% shooting.
The Spaniard progressed through Real Madrid’s youth system and eventually made his first and only appearance for Los Blancos’ senior team as a 17-year-old, briefly taking the floor in their 85-64 win over UCAM Murcia in November 2024. He logged more playing time for their B Team that season, averaging 8.1 points and 2.2 rebounds over 21 games, and was one of Real Madrid’s standouts on their U18 team in last season’s NextGen EuroLeague tournament, averaging 10.8 points per game in seven contests, including a 15-point outing against Overtime Elite.

Last season, Giménez moved stateside to play on the Nike EYBL Scholastic Circuit for Bella Vista Prep in Arizona, and played a minor role for their dominant championship team that went 18-3 in the regular season and playoffs.
Giménez is an active, multi-positional defender who can disrupt passing lanes and frustrate ball-handlers. While he is an effective slasher, Giménez has a long way to go as an outside shooter. He only made four of his 21 three-point attempts in last year’s FIBA U18 EuroBasket tournament, and he only hit 2-of-14 from deep for Real Madrid’s U18 squad in the 2024-25 season.
Although Giménez most likely won’t be a factor in year one, he adds to the Red Storm’s rotational depth on the wing and becomes an intriguing developmental prospect.
