St. Cloud State hires new golf coach who still holds Minnesota HS record

Trey Fessler has been named the new coach of the men's and women's golf teams at St. Cloud State University.

Fessler is the first coach hired following the restart of the program for the 2026-27 season. He is the 19th overall coach of the men's program and the 10th coach of the women's program.

"We are thrilled to have Trey join our department as our men’s and women’s golf head coach," St. Cloud State athletic director Holly Schreiner said in a news release. "His enthusiasm, integrity and commitment to developing this program align perfectly with our vision of success. We look forward to the future of our golf programs under his leadership."

Fessler is an accomplished collegiate and professional golfer who earned 2020 NJCAA All-America honors and PGA Tour status in Latin America from 2021-23. In the professional ranks, Fessler has won 23 events, including the 2025 Minnesota Golf Champions and Minnesota PGA Assistant Championship tournaments. He is currently a teaching professional at Albany Golf Club.

Fessler competed collegiately at Mesa Community College and Tampa University. At Mesa, he was a 2020 NJCAA First Team All-American and Jack Nicklaus Award finalist after posting a 70.86 scoring average. He competed in five events with Tampa, tying for 15th at the 2021 Sunshine State Conference Tournament.

The Hanover, Minnesota, native competed for St. Michael-Albertville High School, where he was a six-year letter winner and six-year state participant, finishing runner-up twice. He holds the high school state record in Minnesota with a round of 63 and participated in the 2016 and 2019 US Junior Amateur Championships.
