EWING — Sparta defeated Ocean City, 9-5, in the Group 2 boys lacrosse final on June 13 at The College of New Jersey. The win marked Sparta’s first group title in program history.

Sparta advanced to Saturday’s Group final with a dominant 12-4 upset win over top-seeded West Morris in the North Jersey Group 2 final. Goalie Jake Alliegro made 16 saves, while three Sparta players had hat tricks. The Spartans also defeated No. 15 Paramus, No. 7 Mendham and No. 3 Holmdel on their way to the title.

Scoring was sparse to start on Saturday, as both teams netted just one goal in the first quarter. The two squads entered halftime with Sparta up 2-1. The score remained close at the break, partly due to goalies Jake Alliegro (Sparta) and Tim Windfelder’s (Ocean City) play in net and Sparta’s perfect 3-for-3 rate on killing man-up chances.

In the second half, though, Sparta took over. It outscored Ocean City 7-4. Five of those goals came in the third quarter, courtesy of a three-goal run in a little over a minute, catalyzed by faceoff man Johnny Palmer. That helped the Spartans cruise to a victory in the fourth quarter and claim their first-ever group title.
