Spain record in World Cup knockouts: Breaking down La Roja’s terrible run since 2010 trophy win originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Spain arrived at World Cup 2026 as one of the most talented squads in the field, but Group H wasn't exactly smooth sailing.
A scoreless draw with Cape Verde, a 4-0 win over Saudi Arabia and a 1-0 battle past Uruguay were enough to finish top of the group with seven points, but the performances did not quieten the doubters back home.
That's perhaps because finishing first in the group stage has become the easy part for Spain. Since lifting the trophy in 2010, La Roja have developed a habit of falling apart exactly when the World Cup turns to knockout football, and Thursday's Round of 32 clash with Austria in Inglewood is the latest test of whether that pattern finally breaks.
Here's a look at Spain's record in the World Cup's knockout rounds since that 2010 triumph, and what it would take for Luis de la Fuente's team to finally get over the hump in 2026.

Spain record in World Cup knockouts since 2010
Incredibly, since winning it all in 2010, Spain have not won a single World Cup knockout match.
- Games played: 2
- Wins: 0
- Draws: 2*
- Losses: 0
*Games that go to extra time and are then decided on penalties are officially recorded as draws.
World Cup 2018 Round of 16: Russia 1, Spain 1 (Russia won 5-3 on penalties)
World Cup 2022 Round of 16: Spain 0, Morocco 0 (Morocco won 3-0 on penalties)
In their only two knockout-round appearances since then, in 2018 and 2022, La Roja were eliminated on penalties at the first time of asking, going out to Russia in the Round of 16 in 2018 and to Morocco at the same stage four years later.
Even more damningly, Spain didn't make the knockout rounds at all in 2014, crashing out in the group stage as defending champions after a 5-1 humbling by the Netherlands and a loss to Chile rendered a 3-0 win over Australia redundant. They became the second straight World Cup winner eliminated in the group stage the following tournament, after Italy in 2010. Germany followed suit in 2018.
Add in Spain's earlier shootout losses to Belgium in 1986 and South Korea in 2002, and La Roja have now lost four penalty shootouts, more than any team in tournament history.
What is Spain's best World Cup finish since 2010?
Spain's only World Cup title came in 2010, winning all four knockout matches 1-0 against Portugal, Paraguay and Germany before downing the Netherlands in extra time of the final.
Since then, the furthest they have gone is the Round of 16, and they haven't won a single knockout match in that time. That means Spain, one of the most decorated international sides of the last two decades, hasn't been past the last 16 in over a decade and a half.
