It was clear from the early going that the Newman University Jets hoped to contain Missouri Southern State University’s leading scorer, Ashlyn Alloway, but that strategy was unsuccessful and the Southern women powered their way to a 71-62 win Saturday at Robert Ellis Young Gymnasium.
Alloway, who is averaging 15.7 ppg, faced double-team pressure for most of the game but finished with her sixth double-double this season after netting 15 points and 12 rebounds.
Nariah Clay stepped up to claim team-high honors with 19 points and two steals, and Grace Frazier recorded 17 points in the win.
Alloway talked about the extra defensive pressure from Newman and how Clay’s role helped the Lions claim the win.
“The team knows that if people are guarding me and making it hard for me to get the ball, we have other options that can score and put up just as many points,” Alloway said. “I know that if I’m getting hard-guarded, someone else on my team can go take it.”
MSSU head coach Ronnie Ressel weighed in on his team’s ability to adjust to the extra pressure.
“It makes it a lot easier when you have multiple kids that can score the basketball,” Ressel said. “With us, we have three kids that we feel can score the ball and a couple other kids that I know can make shots as well. That’s a big plus for us.”
MSSU opened the game on a 7-0 run and by the 3:50 mark was up 13-5 after a Frazier drive to the rim for a score. Frazier took a hard charge from Jaeden McMillin and appeared shaken up. She exited the game at the 2:10 mark but later returned to start the second quarter.
“She’s not afraid to stick her nose in there,” Ressel said of Frazier. “She’s always been that way. She’s a fun kid to coach. She’s a very competitive kid. A kid like Grace is constantly giving great effort — everything she’s got, every game, every practice and every workout she does is at 100 miles an hour.”
Clay closed out the quarter with a pair of free throws that gave the Lions an 18-12 lead heading into the second period.
Newman had its best effort in the second quarter, outscoring the Lions 21-17.
The Jets closed to within 2 points at the 8:10 mark off an Alexis Martin 3-pointer that made it a 23-21 game. Newman earned its only lead of the game with 3:19 left in the half after a McMillin trey that made it a 32-31 game.
Their lead was short-lived as Clay scored on back-to-back jumpers to put the Lions up 35-33 going into the half.
Newman tied the game at 35 with a Paige Craft layup to start the third quarter, but the Lions regained the lead off a Clay trey at the 8:50 mark.
The Clay 3-pointer sparked a 10-0 run by the Lions that was capped off by an Alloway layup that gave Southern a 45-35 lead with 3:45 left in the third.
Martin ended a nearly six-minute scoring drought for Newman with a layup at the 3:28 mark, but Southern closed out the third quarter holding a 49-43 lead.
The Jets closed to within 4 points at 49-45 off a Valeriya Lioukina score at the 9:03 mark, but Southern responded with an 8-1 run that gave the Lions a 57-46 advantage with 7:21 remaining in the game.
Newman pared the Southern lead to 59-53 off a Craft jumper at 4:58, but MSSU closed out the win by outscoring the Jets 12-10 down the stretch to claim the 71-63 win.
McMillin led Newman with 22 points and seven rebounds. Craft finished with 14 points, and Martin chipped in with 11.
Saturday’s win put Southern (11-4, 5-1) in a four-way tie for first place in the MIAA with Fort Hays State University (14-1, 5-1), Pittsburg State University (12-3, 5-1) and the University of Central Missouri (11-4, 5-1).
The Lions — 8-1 in their last nine games — hit the road Wednesday for a matchup with the University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond.
