COLUMBIA — South Carolina women's basketball coach Dawn Staley is hoping the extra rest will help her injured players ahead of a big game against LSU.
The No. 3 Gamecocks (24-2, 10-1 SEC) have been down two players the past three games but still made it through a three-game week undefeated, their most recent a 93-50 win over Tennessee on Feb. 8.
They don't play again till Feb. 14 (8:30 p.m. ET, ABC) against LSU in the Pete Maravich Assembly Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
Freshman guard Agot Makeer hasn't played since the first quarter vs. Auburn on Jan. 29 for a unspecified lower leg injury.
"Agot is getting better," Staley said Feb. 9 on the "Carolina Calls" radio show. "She tried to get out there and do warm-ups yesterday. She started to do some things, some drills in practice. Haven't really gotten an entire practice down . . . hopefully by Saturday we can get her back. If not, we'll just keep on, keeping on."
Sophomore point guard Maddy McDaniel was healthy until appearing as out on the injury report an hour before tipoff against Tennessee, then wore a boot on her left ankle. Staley said she's day to day.
"We'll see what the rest does for her the next two days, and see how she's feeling on Wednesday," Staley said.
Fresh off the game against Tennessee, she didn't have a status update on McDaniel but said: "It's good we have somewhat of a bye week. Maddy wants to play, I know that, when you have the mindset you want to play, it helps the body heal quicker."
She gave credit to both athletic trainer Craig Oates and sports performance coach Molly Binetti, saying they both are working hard to get Makeer more comfortable to play longer stretches in practice.
On Feb. 6, Makeer was off to the side on exercise equipment while the team was breaking down the final drills of practice.
Starting senior guard Ta'Niya Latson also stopped playing in the first half of the Auburn game and missed the next two but returned in the win over Tennessee, playing with a large brace on her left knee. She had a team-high 21 points.
In 17 games this season, Staley has started or finished a game down at least one player not including Chloe Kitts, who tore her ACL in September before the season started.
