South Africa delay World Cup departure over visa problems

The South African national team has been forced to delay its departure for the World Cup in Mexico because of visa problems, the South African Football Association (SAFA) said on Sunday.

"The South African senior men's national team has experienced challenges regarding Visas for some players and officials, and as a result the group could not travel to North America this morning as originally planned," the association said in a statement.

The team, nicknamed Bafana Bafana, had been due to begin their tournament preparations in Mexico.

South African Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie said the squad was now expected to fly by charter on Monday.

"All @BafanaBafana players received their visas to travel to the USA, outstanding is assistant coach, team doctor, head of security and one analyst," he said on X.

SAFA had earlier said it was working "around the clock" to get the team to Mexico City as quickly as possible.

South Africa are due to face co-hosts Mexico in the opening match of the World Cup on June 11.

South Africa will also face the Czech Republic and South Korea in Group A.
