Boston Red Sox first baseman Willson Contreras believes Sonny Gray is proving he’s one of the best pitchers in baseball.
Gray took the mound on Monday in the first game of a three-game road trip against the Kansas City Royals, and he was dominant. The right-hander recorded a season-high nine strikeouts in six-plus innings, while allowing just one run on five hits.
It was a stellar outing from Gray, and following Boston’s 3-1 win, Willson Contreras had high praise for the right-hander.
“I think he can be one of the best pitchers in baseball,” Contreras said postgame on Monday. “He's been doing it for a long time. He’s a vet. He knows what he's doing, he knows the hitter, he knows the count, he knows everything. His preparation is off the charts, and that's what happens when you prepare yourself well and execute pitches.”
After another stellar outing, Gray went 5-1 with a 2.93 ERA in eight starts this season, as he’s been a saviour of the rotation amid all the injuries to the pitching staff.
With the win on Monday, Boston is now 20-27 and will look for the series win on Tuesday at 7:40 p.m. ET. Ranger Suarez will take the mound for Boston, while Bailey Falter will start for the Royals.
