Tonight, the Boston Red Sox are going into the next series of their road trip after grabbing two of three from the Seattle Mariners. Going against the Colorado Rockies, they look to try to sweep after it eluded them against Seattle.

If they can, they can probably justify being buyers at the trade deadline. However, if they don’t, they might host a bit of a fire sale. One of the guys that could be atop their list would be one of their All-Star pitchers, Sonny Gray.

Gray has been coveted by a lot of people this year, as he’s been very successful. Because of that, some analysts think the Sox should trade him while his value is this high.

On top of that, Gray is open to being traded himself. According to an interview with Gray by the Boston Globe’s Tim Healey, Gray would be willing to talk about waiving his no-trade clause.

“If someone came to me from the Red Sox and made a decision that that’s the direction that this team was going to go, I would be open for a conversation… Whatever happens from then, only time will tell. But I would be open for a conversation,” Gray said.

As previously stated, Gray has been very good in Boston. So far this season, he’s posted a 8-1 record, a 3.12 ERA, 55 Ks, and a WHIP of 1.183 over 69 innings pitched.

So, if the Red Sox do want to contend, losing him would not be beneficial. However, with superstar ace Garrett Crochet’s return from injury still up in the air, so is Gray’s future with Boston.

The verdict is still out, for now

Overall, both sides have an argument. For the keepers, Gray is a winner, and that’s something the Sox desperately need. Being only six games out of the final slot of the AL Wildcard, trading away one of your best pitchers is not a great idea.

On the flip side, Gray has a mutual option for $30 million next season. With no guarantee that he will stay, and the Sox probably not wanting to pay that, trading him now while his value is probably the best it will be also makes sense.

It all comes down to the Red Sox’s next seven games on the road. If they win more often than not, Gray will probably play out this season. If they don’t, he might be wearing a different jersey in August.
