The Boston Red Sox needed Sonny Gray to halt a concerning personal trend Wednesday night. Instead, the veteran starter delivered a performance that looked like it came straight from his prime. Gray silenced the first-place Chicago White Sox over six innings in Boston’s 4-0 victory, helping the Red Sox extend their winning streak to seven games. He allowed only three hits and two walks while striking out eight, improving his record to an outstanding 14-2.
It was quite the response from the 36-year-old after he surrendered nine earned runs over 12 innings in his previous two starts.
Chad Tracy Sees ‘Vintage Sonny’ In Red Sox Win
Gray looked comfortable from the opening pitch, mixing his breaking pitches effectively and repeatedly convincing Chicago hitters to chase below the strike zone.
“I thought he was awesome,” Tracy said, per MLB.com’s Ian Browne. “Very, very locked in and determined from the time he got here, and he executed his pitches, had his spin pretty much whenever he wanted to.”
Tracy then offered the description every Red Sox fan wanted to hear.
“It looked like vintage Sonny.”
The White Sox briefly threatened when Caleb Durbin made a diving stop on Miguel Vargas’ ground ball but could not record the out at first. Willson Contreras rescued the inning by throwing out Sam Antonacci at home plate.
Gray took care of everything else.
His eight strikeouts matched his combined total from his previous two outings against the Toronto Blue Jays and Athletics. More importantly, Gray gave Boston six scoreless innings while the offense did enough to support him.
Wilyer Abreu provided the biggest swing with his 20th home run of the season against Chicago starter Sean Burke.

Red Sox Continue Remarkable Summer Surge
Boston’s offseason trade for Gray initially appeared to be a calculated gamble. The Red Sox did not need him to recapture every part of his former All-Star form, but that is essentially what they have received. His latest outing also ensured Boston’s remarkable run did not lose momentum. The Red Sox have won 25 of their last 28 games and nine consecutive series, their longest such streak since 1912.
That surge has pushed Boston to within one game of the New York Yankees for the first American League wild-card position. The Red Sox also sit 5.5 games behind the Tampa Bay Rays in the AL East, keeping a division title within reach. Gray described Boston’s current mentality in much simpler terms.
“Just expecting to win,” Gray said, per Browne. “Showing up to the park and just expecting to win no matter what it looks like.”
That confidence is understandable. Right now, the Red Sox are finding different ways to win nearly every night.
On Wednesday, their formula was wonderfully uncomplicated: Give the ball to Gray and enjoy the vintage show.
