When a college athlete enters the transfer portal, it's normal for the fanbase to not be particularly enthused with the news. Sometimes, there's more hard feelings coming from the fanbase that had supported that player so deeply. What's less common is for a head coach to have hard feelings over a player departing — especially publicly.
But that's exactly the sentiment that TCU head football coach Sonny Dykes pushed onto viewers and listeners during a local podcast appearance, as he appeared to take a slight dig at his former quarterback Josh Hoover in delivering a one-liner that was sure to make headlines.
"Josh started 31 games here as a quarterback and turned the ball over 42 times," he said plainly.
Dykes is spot on with that mark, as Hoover threw 33 interceptions and lost nine fumbles during his roughly three seasons as the Horned Frogs' starter. He departed from the program this offseason, heading to Bloomington to join the national championship defending Indiana Hoosiers. It's a desirable spot for a quarterback looking to blossom into an NFL-level talent, as Cal's Fernando Mendoza spent his final season with the Hoosiers under head coach Curt Cignetti and is now the presumed No. 1 pick in the 2026 NFL Draft.
The bitterness is clear in Dykes' voice, who may be feeling gipped that Hoover decided to head elsewhere for his final season of eligibility. After all, Dykes had a significant hand in developing 2016 No. 1 overall pick Jared Goff at Cal.
While there's a certain bitterness, it also appears that Dykes is trying to play off the loss of his three-year starter at the game's most important position.
In Hoover's place, the Horned Frogs' starter come this fall is expected to be Harvard transfer quarterback Jaden Craig, who started two seasons for the Crimson and totaled 52 touchdowns to just 12 interceptions — apparently, the latter being a key number for TCU's head coach despite Hoover impressing with amassing 79 total touchdowns in three seasons.
Regardless of the raw numbers, it's not a great look for Dykes, who's bitterness is seeping through on a public level.
