WINDBER — Lindee Reed delivered four hits and four RBIs, which was more than enough run support for senior hurler Makenna Gula as Punxsutawney stymied Somerset 9-1 in the District 5-9 Class 4A subregional softball championship, Wednesday, May 27, in Windber.
"We've been waiting for our offensive to come alive," said Punxsutawney coach Brian Hallman. "We've got an explosive team. We hit with a lot of power. We have hitters all the way through the lineup. I have good hitters on the bench. Makenna did a great job today as well."
The Chucks racked up 16 hits, including three home runs in the game off Somerset senior pitcher Brooklynn Thomas.

Punxsutawney (17-3) struck first in the top of the third on an Ava Snyder RBI single that scored Brinley Hallman, who singled in the inning.
Somerset (13-8) knotted things in the fourth without recording a hit. Abby DiFebo laid down a perfect bunt, which was thrown away by the third baseman, allowing courtesy runner Addison Berkey to score from second. DiFebo had the lone Somerset hit of the game in the second.
It was all Punxsutawney from there. Reed hit a 2-run home run in the fifth. The Chucks added a pair in the fourth on a 2-run single by Reed.
Punxsutawney tacked on four runs in the top of the seventh with a pair of 2-run home runs by Hallman and freshman Ally Manners.
Gula, who was slated to be the No. 2 starter in the circle behind Hallman, spun a gem. She walked four, hit a batter and struck out 12. Hallman has not pitched since Game 5 of the season but was relegated to shortstop as she deals with a hip impingement. Gula is headed to Mount Aloysius, while Hallman will pitch at St. Francis.
Meanwhile, the Golden Eagles had a turnaround season after finishing sub-.500 a season ago.
"One game is not indicative of how well the girls played and performed all season," Somerset coach Craig Stinebiser said. "We played hard, just didn't get this one. It was a very competitive game until the last inning or two. You can't judge a season by one game. I am proud of these girls."

A 4-run fifth inning propelled top seed Everett over second seed Windber 5-3, in the District 5 Class 2A softball championship game at Claysburg-Kimmel.
Senior Kaylie Gaye hit a 2-run home run, while Cameron Mash added two hits and Riley Mock chipped in an RBI for the Ramblers.
Windber led 3-0, before Everett scored in the bottom of the third. An error by the Ramblers in the fifth allowed the Warriors to break a 3-3 tie.
It is the second time this season Everett bested Windber by two runs.
