The J.F. Kennedy High School softball team lost two of three last week, but its senior shortstop is hardly at fault. She went 10-for-12 in those games with three RBI, two doubles, two triples and her fourth home run of the season. She ended the week with hits in her last nine at bats.

The Drew-bound senior continued her torrid pace this week, going 5-for-7 in two games with two doubles, a triple and five RBIs. She went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI in a 4-3 upset of Edison, which was 10-1 at the time.

Going into Friday’s divisional clash with Carteret, Lorentzen was batting .735 and slugging 1.490 this season with 36 hits, including nine doubles, eight triples and four home runs. Despite missing her entire sophomore campaign due to injury, she entered Friday’s game needing just six hits to reach 100 for her career.

“I’ve been coaching since 2009 and I can honestly say that Lorelei is the best athlete to ever grace our softball field,” Mustang coach Maureen Gallagher said. “She’s a sponge. She’s the most coachable young lady and she’s a leader with her work ethic, not necessarily her words. Every adjustment she’s made turned into progress for her. I knew, probably, about three days into her freshman year that she was something special, and she’s lived up to and beyond every expectation I had for her. I’ve never seen a season like this in my life.”
