LANEY ADIE

Warren Hills

Senior

The Blue Streaks ran their winning streak to three games after a two-game sweep over Bernards last week, and their senior ace has certainly been front and center. The righty allowed just two earned in 22 innings during the three-game run, on 14 hits, no walks and 31 strikeouts, including respective 12 and 15-strikeout outings against the Mountaineers. She also homered Tuesday at Bernards. She’s 6-4 on the year with a 1.42 ERA, surrendering just four walks all year against 109 strikeouts in 69 innings. Adie also chipped in two doubles, a homer and seven RBIs at the plate.

MARISELA CARDONA

Colonia

Senior

The Patriots are riding a five-game winning streak and the third baseman has been a prime factor, as she has gone 10-for-16 with seven RBI and at least one in each of the outings. For the season, she is batting .439, slugging .585 and her 15 RBIs matches her total from last year in half as many at bats. She’s 17 hits shy of 100, which would be quite an accomplishment for a player who had just nine hits as a freshman.

ALEXA DEVESA

Dunellen

Junior

She has had multiple hits and runs scored in five straight games, going 12-for-14 and scoring 13 times over that span. She ignited the Destroyers’ seven-run, seventh-inning rally against North Plainfield with a leadoff walk. She is batting .692 and slugging .962, and her 18 hits represent more than she had in either of her first two varsity campaigns.

BRYNN HAWLEY

Bridgewater-Raritan

Sophomore

The Panthers were hoping their young ace could do enough to keep them in games, as they projected to challenge for the Raritan Division and contend in the county. BR is in the mix for a division title and was recently awarded the No. 3 seed in the Somerset County Tournament, but while several of the team’s big bats have yet to hit their stride, it’s been Hawley’s arm that has had the biggest hand in the club’s success. The sophomore was at it again last week, as the Panthers swept a pair from Franklin, running their winning streak to four games. Hawley allowed just one run last week in two games and six total in 26 innings during the streak, walking just seven and striking out 11. She’s 6-2 for the season with a 3.05 ERA – most of that coming during an unfortunate 11-earned run outing on a cold day at Phillipsburg two weeks ago.

HALEY KESSLER

New Providence

Junior

The Pioneers ripped through three wins last week, beating Chatham, Union Catholic and Union to improve to 6-2, and their junior shortstop posted three of her biggest performances of the season to continue her hot start. Kessler went 8-for-13 in the three games last week, with a double, triple and three home runs, including two against Union on Thursday. She also drove in eight runs and scored six, while stealing three bases. She’s hitting .429 for the season with 10 RBIs and 12 runs scored, plus seven stolen bases.

LORELEI LORENTZEN

J.F. Kennedy

Senior

The Falcons lost two of three last week, but their senior shortstop is hardly at fault. Lorentzen went 10-for-12 in those games with three RBIs, two doubles two triples and her fourth home run of the season, and she has hits in each of her last nine at bats. She is batting .738 and slugging 1.524 for the season, with 31 hits and 32 runs scored. She begins this week with 89 hits, despite missing her entire sophomore campaign with an injury

EMILY ROOF

Scotch Plains-Fanwood

Junior

The Raiders have been one of the darlings of the Union County Conference this season, following last year’s stunning run to the Union County Tournament final by getting off to a phenomenal 10-3 start to this year. And while it’s certainly been a team effort, both at the plate and in the circle, Roof has certainly been in the mix and had a big part of last week’s 4-0 slate. Roof went 6-for-12 at the plate in the four games, with a double, two homers and six RBIs, while picking up a win in the circle over Cranford on Tuesday, permitting just one earned run on four hits in six innings, walking two and striking out five. She’s hitting .357 for the season with five doubles, three homers, 10 runs and 15 RBIs, adding four walks, three hit by pitches and three stolen bases. She’s also 2-0 in the circle with a 1.94 ERA in 18 innings, allowing 15 hits, seven walks and striking out 17.

ZOHA SHAIKH

Woodbridge Academy Magnet

Sophomore

The Hornets have won their last six games against GMC schools and Shaikh has earned the victory in the last five contests. She struck out 13 and walked eight last week in two games, while compiling a 3.23 ERA. For the season, she has a 3.27 ERA with 62 strikeouts and 24 walks in 45 innings. She’s batting .308 this year and has recorded 220 strikeouts in 138 1/3 innings over her budding career.

ELISE SCHEETZ

South Hunterdon

Sophomore

The Eagles have won six straight to tick their record up to 7-3 and their sophomore ace has picked up right where she left off after a standout freshman campaign. Scheetz allowed just one earned run in four outings last week, going 4-0, and allowing just 14 hits and three walks, striking out 32 in 22 innings. She also helped out at the plate, going 7-for-17 with a double and six RBIs. She’s batting .324 for the season with 11 RBIs, while posting a 6-3 record with a 2.02 ERA, surrendering just three walks and striking out 63 in 52 innings.

JOCELYN SOSA

South Plainfield

Junior

The third baseman has been the top offensive weapon for the area’s top-ranked team. She went 4-for-10 with six RBIs and smacked her fourth home run of the season in last week’s three wins. Sosa drove in a run against Monroe in her lone hitless game of the campaign, followed that with the home run and five RBIs against Metuchen, then contributed a double in the Tigers’ come-from-behind victory over then top-ranked St. Thomas Aq3uinas. She’s batting .433 and slugging .933 this year after posting .265/.382 figures in her first campaign as a starter last year.
