FULTON — Hadlie Coffing took a no-hitter into the sixth inning and the Caston softball team teed off on Lewis Cass in a 14-4 win Monday.

The Comets (1-1) bounced back from a 6-5 loss at Carroll last Thursday to even their record.

Coffing had a no-no going until running into some trouble in the sixth. But by then the Comets had built an 8-0 lead.

An error on a dropped fly ball started a late rally for the Kings (0-1). Alisha Toops had their first hit of the game on a sharp RBI single up the middle. Kami Silcox followed with a hit. Coffing dialed up a strikeout for the second out. But Shay Dishner had a two-run single to left followed by an RBI double by Kylie Logan to right to chase Coffing. Natalie Warner relieved and got a strikeout to end the inning with Caston still holding an 8-4 lead.

Coffing, a sophomore righthander, allowed four runs (none earned) on four hits and three walks, striking out eight in 5 2/3 innings.

“I think we all played really well and we just hit the ball really well tonight,” Coffing said. “I think the defense had my back and did well the rest of the time.”

The Comets had their offense rolling and had a chance to end the game early with two runs in the bottom of the fifth but they were held off the board, costing Coffing in her no-hit bid.

“I think I could have had it, but I got a little tired towards the end of the game,” she said. “But I think I can get one of these times.”

Coffing is looking to make a jump from her freshman to sophomore season on the mound.

The Comets were young last year following the graduation of Addison Zimpleman and Isabel Scales and are coming off a 5-17 season.

“I’ve improved on my control over my pitches and I picked up on my speed because I’ve been working really hard on that on the last season,” Coffing said.

The Comets ended it early with four runs in the bottom of the sixth against reliever Toops. Kylee Logan ended it with a walkoff RBI single.

The Comets pounded out 12 hits for the game. Freshman Lexie Field had a triple, single and three RBIs. Alex Mersch had a double, single and two runs scored. Warner and Logan had two hits apiece. Mia Mersch and Emily Rodas each added a hit.

The Comets did some of the damage early against Lewis Cass senior ace Amma Fitzhugh, who is set to pitch at NAIA Oakland City University.

Fitzhugh allowed six runs (three earned) on five hits and one walk in three innings, striking out five.

“I think Amma may have been a little under the weather tonight. She was coughing quite a bit and it’s Amma’s first game of the year,” Cass coach Rusty Logan said.

The game was played with gusts of 23 mph in a 45 degree wind chill.

“Maybe the weather, maybe a little sickness got to her tonight,” Logan said. “She’s a pretty good pitcher. She’s been good for three years, so I don’t expect this to be something that we have issues with during the season. I think she’ll bounce back pretty good.”

Logan was more concerned about the offense, which was more of an issue last year during an 8-14 season.

“The biggest takeaway tonight was our hitting really needs some work,” he said. “We really struggled at the plate today. I don’t know if it was the weather or just the difference of movement that she may have had tonight, but hitting was definitely the big problem.

“We had a good inning and that seems to be what happened last year. We would have several games where we had good innings. We just couldn’t string innings together often. But we know what we need to work on now. So we got three days off before our next game, so hopefully we will get things corrected and be ready to play Friday.”

The Kings are looking to brush off Monday’s loss and improve on their eight wins from a year ago. They travel to Carroll on Friday.

“We’re senior heavy, so if the senior’s attitudes are in it, we should be good,” Logan said. “We’ve had some really good practices and we’ve had some decent practices, so I think for being the first game, I think we’ll get things corrected and we everybody get on board and we’ll be ready to go.”

For Caston coach Jon Burks, Monday’s game was a good sign after a loss to Carroll last week and a five-win season a year ago. The Comets are looking to contend again in the HNAC and Class 1A.

“We’ve been really working hard trying to change things from last year,” Burks said. “I think they’re all on board about what I’m trying to do here. I think we fizzled out against Carroll the other night. But tonight we played the same game and was able to attack her. Last year she shut us down over there. But I’m liking what I see. We still have a lot of work to do yet, and we don’t have very many practice days to do that. But we’ve got to touch base with a few things.

“We definitely cut down our errors. I think we had seven last week. We had four this time. Strikeouts for Hadlie doubled. So things are moving for the better. Hadlie almost had a no-hitter. She was getting pretty close there. I was hoping nobody would say anything. And then I think stamina starts to play a little bit, but I think that’ll come in due time.”
