The Wisconsin Badgers men's hockey team failed to win its seventh National Championship.
The team's 2-1 loss to Denver is one that's going to sit with head coach Mike Hastings for quite some time.
In his two National Championship games against the Pioneers, Hastings has outscored Denver 2-0 in the first and second periods. When the third period comes around, he's been outscored 7-0.
Wisconsin enjoyed an early 1-0 lead thanks to a goal from freshman Vasily Zelenov. The Badgers were clearly the better team for the first 45 minutes, but Denver scored a pair of third-period goals that proved to be the difference maker.
As expected, fans were left stunned and heartbroken at the defeat. Wisconsin's men's team had a chance to replicate the success their women's program has recently experienced, but at the end of the day, making it this far was a huge success considering the fact that this team didn't even make the tournament last season.
Nevertheless, Wisconsin fans took to social media to share their reactions after the heartbreaking loss.

Badgers were the better team by far!! They outplayed them 99.8% of the game. Great season, guys!

refs straight up handed denver that entire third period, couldn’t give wisco a penalty call at all and called a phantom hold in crunch time

Dominated first two periods then completely fell apart in the third
Awesome season but what a horrible way to end it

Fantastic season and an unbelievable run to the national championship game. Totally outplayed Denver and deserved to win the national championship, but unfortunately the lucky breaks go to Denver once again. On Wisconsin! Thanks for the great memories by an awesome team!

No thank you! The expectations for this program have never wavered. Hastings will keep the program rolling! On Wisconsin forever
