FIFA went all-in with its halftime show for the World Cup final on Sunday. Shakira, Justin Bieber, Madonna, Burna Boy and BTS, among others, headlined the performance. Fans were treated to a star-studded show, but soccer legend Wayne Rooney wasn’t happy with it.
The former England and Manchester United midfielder blasted the halftime performance. He didn’t mince words with how he described it and stressed that it didn’t get him going.

“My favorite bit of the half time show was when it finished,” Rooney said. “I like all of them artists but I thought it was crap.”
Rooney’s co-hosts didn’t expect his comments and were visibly surprised. They went on to discuss the first half, particularly how Spain and Argentina played physically throughout the first 45 minutes.

The halftime show lasted 11 minutes, and the crowd at the New York New Jersey Stadium gave a strong ovation to the performers. The organizers extended the total halftime break to 27 minutes and 27 seconds due to the time required to set up and remove the stage.
Madonna opened the festivities, followed by Gustavo Dudamel with the Muppets, BTS, and Justin Bieber. Shakira and Burna Boy performed the 2026 FIFA World Cup theme song “Dai Dai” in the finale. Coldplay’s Chris Martin curated the show and supported the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund. The broadcast reached millions of fans around the world.
