This years defensive players I think dominate this draft. There are so many good defensive linemen, linebackers and cornerbacks to choose from we should come away with several starters. Looking at where the Cards draft in the first round, I've made my short list of players that I would like to see us draft.

My number one prospect is LB Jaylon Smith. He would be a top five pick if it were not for his injury. He can play any linebacker position. Being able to move him around like that would create havoc for offenses. Think of Daryl Washington only better. He is a three down player that can do anything we ask him to do. He can cover backs and tight ends, blitz and tackle sideline to sideline. He moves like a defensive back instead of a 245 lb linebacker. I think he will be a perennial pro-bowler. If we draft him I think he would become every bit the impact player that Patrick Peterson is. I believe he is worth the risk with our first pick. It's not very often you get a chance to draft a linebacker that can make an impact like a Lawrence Taylor and that's how I see his career going.

Kevin Dodd
He is my favorite DE in this draft. He plays the run as well as he rushes the passer. He is an all around player that can play every down. He had 23.5 TFL and 12 sacks. He had three sacks in the Championship game against Alabama so he knows how to step up in big games. At 6-5 280 he already has the size and strength to play as a rookie and the frame to get bigger. If we draft him I would start him day one opposite of Campbell.

Ryan Kelly
My favorite Center in this draft and should be taken around where we pick. We need a quality Center bad and Kelly would be a solid starter for us. He doesn't have a single weakness to his game. A three year starter and the Rimington Trophy winner, he made all the line calls as the leader of the Alabama line. A very smart player that was named SEC scholar athlete of the year. He already has the awareness to pick up stunts and blitzes. He's very good at both run blocking and pass blocking. The Cardinals need a smart leader for the O-line and Kelly would be a great leader. Yes he is what I call a safe pick and a need pick, but I wouldn't blame the Cards for taking him one bit.

William Jackson CB
6-0 3/8 189 4.39 40yd
To me he is the third best CB in this draft. He is a guy that can be a number one CB. He has the height, length and speed the Cards are looking for. He had a ridiculous amount of PBU's (passes broken up) last year 23 to go along with 5 INT's. He has excellent ball skills. He has a very smooth transition from his back pedal when he turns and runs with the receiver. Complete package for a CB. He would make a great number two to PP21.

These are my top four guys for us where we are picking at 29 that might be there. A couple other guys I like are Kenny Clark DT UCLA and Leonard Floyd Georgia.

Kenny Clark- I love how he always has his eyes in the backfield. I think his best asset is the way he sheds blocks. He watches the RB and tosses aside the O-lineman right when he needs to to make the tackle. He does this better than any other DT in this draft IMO. He doesn't have great strength or get off, but has a solid all around game. He has football smarts playing inside at DT and will be a solid run defender. I think of him more as a second round pick.

Leonard Floyd
6-4 235 A very good athlete that reminds me of Jamir Miller. He hasn't put it all together yet and I think it will take a couple years for him to develop, but he has the potential to be an outstanding OLB. He can bend around the edge as a pass rusher and has the speed to cover. Will be a LB that can stay on the field all three downs.

My favorite guys for us in the third round are OLB Victor Ochi and RB Jordan Howard.

Victor Ochi
Love this guy as a pass rusher. Good motor, get off and burst to the QB. I know he is a small school guy and his competition wasn't that great at Stony Brook College but he looks really good on film.

Jordan Howard
He reminds me of David Johnson. What's wrong with having two great running backs. Some guys on this board have liked this guy for a while and I have to agree with them.

Good stuff, I like the 4 players you picked, hopefully one will still be on the board at #29. I also like DT Veron Butler Louisiana Tech. Most have him going lower part of Round One.

Gary, have you watched last year's Mississippi/Alabama game? I just don't see how Ryan Kelly is rated as high as he is. I would grade him a B+ run blocker and C+ pass protector. He gives up a lot of pressures---it's like he squares up on the DT and then after a one count, he stands in cement and the DT swims right around him. The CBS crew showed a short segment of recent Bama interceptions and 3 of the 4 were rushed throws because Kelly's man swam right through him. Then on the next play in the Mississippi game, the same thing happens and a rushed Coker throws it up for grabs right into the waiting arms of the FS.

Plus have you seen Kelly in the shotgun? He looks back through his legs like a LS in a punt and snaps the ball just as he starts to lift his head, play after play. Unreal. I kid you not.

Have you watched Michigan St.'s Jack Kelly? While he is a little on the short side, he plays with very good leverage and good feet.

That said---I am 100% with you on every other player you like and would be very happy to see any of them become Cardinals. I would love this:

1. CB William Jackson III
3. OLB Victor Ochi
4. RB Jordan Howard

Yes I watched that game on Kelly. I remember him getting beat a play or two. I also remember the RG was suppose to take on the guy and then didn't and by the time Kelly tried to block him he was already too far past him to block. I personally have Kelly as a mid-second round prospect, but because the Cards need at center is so great I have him rated higher than he should go. I have not found any other center so far that is better than Kelly but I mainly looked at the top five rated centers. I have not watched much film on Jack Allen. Probably just a game. I recall a short squatty tough guy that didn't have that great of movement skills, but good power and leverage. I will watch a few of his games and get back to you soon on my thoughts.

So far Kelley has just been the best that I have seen out of the top rated guys. As far as him looking back through his legs on shot gun snaps that is pretty common with a lot of guys. Especially when they are worried about judging the distance of the snap. Maybe he just wants to be safe instead of sorry. I have watched more of Kelly's games than any other center. His whole body of work is pretty good. He's no Pro-Bowler for sure but he looks pretty solid to me.

I understand the attraction to Jaylon Smith but given what we have been through with DWash, I don't think we can afford to roll the dice on a LBer in R1 who may never be able to contribute at a level commensurate with his draft slot. There is no telling if he will ever be the same.

Okay Mitch I watched Jack Allen in three more games. I like him. He is a decent all-around center. Pretty solid guy. I like him in the fourth round. He's good at the LOS in both run and pass blocking. Not that great getting to the second level or pulling. He does look like he can start in the NFL. He would be my fourth ranked center for this draft.

The 2 positions I hope the Cards do not pick in this draft are RB and TE. I want them to go anyone on D and OL. We have enough RBs and enough quality WRs for at least this year. Don't waste a pick on another one.

I think we are set at TE, WR and RB this year as well. I want us to draft defense more than anything.
