BLOOMINGTON — Bloomington North head coach Justin Helmer had one wish before the Bloomington South Regional on Thursday, May 28.

"I want a boring meet, just get through it and hopefully go as expected."

It was a night of drama and injuries at last week's sectional that left in doubt the top-ranked Cougars' possible run to a state team title.

It was still a not-so-quiet meet Thursday, but in a good way for the athletes from North, South and Edgewood. Everything the Cougars needed to do worked itself out as they won five events and the team title for a seventh year in a row with 144 points to South's 59½.

"It was great," Helmer said. "To see it come together the way it did finally felt like, OK, now the excitement's here, let's go. This is the team we thought we could be. We competed really well. We got faster. Better performances and we got the things to the state meet that we feel we needed to get to the state meet.

"We did the part to set ourselves up. We told them, 'We're not going to win a state meet tonight, but we very well could have lost the state meet tonight. Just great performances all around."

On the hamstring watch front, Evan Cheng was fit enough to get six attempts in and took second again in the long jump (21-8).

And in the 800, Caleb Winders looked back to his old self, tearing off a meet record 1:51.91 (taking down Martin Barco's 1:52.17 from 2024) and holding off Columbus North's Jace Works (1:52.04). Three others beat the state standard as Martinsville's Rayce Wolff (1:53.53) and Caelan D'Onofrio was fifth (1:53.87).

"I got my hamstring worked on a lot this week," Winders said. "Amanda (Warthan) helped a lot, I probably couldn't have done it without her. Tuesday, got up to speed and yesterday more strides and it felt all good.

"I wanted to sit second and third and stay smooth, push, but don't press. I got it done and no pain in the hamstring today. Now, next step is state. I think we have a good shot as a team to win, so that's our goal and I'll do whatever I can to help the team."

D'Onofrio (4:17.58) and Shep Jackson (4:19.30) went 1-3 the 1,600.

"I always say this is the hardest meet of the year by far," D'Onofrio said. "The little rest and pretty good competition. You've really got to race smart. I was able to run hard in the four-by-eight, relax in the 1,600, run smartly and the 800 is always hard."

In the 400, James Bosco had to settle for second but lowered his school record with a 47.97, making him the first Cougar under 48 seconds.

Hurdler Alan Hays also had a second-place run in the 110 hurdles (14.29), nipped by .03, but he came back strong in the 300s to win in 38.30. He also helped the 4x400 to a win in 3:20.38, following Kellen Bishop and RaShon English before handing off to Bosco.

North started things off well as Jake Gentry, Jacob Mitchell, Jackson and D'Onofrio went 7:53.63 for second in the 4x800. The Cougars led Columbus North the whole way until D'Onofrio backed off late to save a bit for his next two races.

"Total team effort," Helmer said.

South was third as Garrett Pitkin, Matthew Zinkan, Jack Taylor and James Rice went a season best 8:01.31.

"They just kept getting better," South coach Larry Williams said. "There's no superstar on it. There's actually six, seven solid guys, so it's been neat seeing that group grow. They just put their noses in there and kept things as close as they could. I'm real proud of them for sure."

Sprinters make a statement

South senior Gabe Taylor and North junior Josiah Powell were able to make it out in both the 100 and 200 with premium efforts.

Taylor had a career day, tying his school record in the 100 (10.75) but settling for second to Jeffersonville's Elijah Cheeks (10.73), then blasting out a new school record in the 200 with a 21.54 that bettered Khaliq Akou's 21.64 from last year at state.

Meanwhile, Powell, like his teammate Eric Shin, has had a late-season breakout. He logged a 10.93 for fifth in the 100, but safely under the state standard (10.97). Then he had a 21.94 for third in the 200, that's No. 3 all-time at North and a nice drop from his previous best of 22.23.

"Honestly, such a big deal," Powell said. "I've been praying about this for a while now. I ran 10.9 in March and never really touched it again. So to come out here and run 10.91, just a massive PR, it's amazing. Just great stuff."

The competition is bringing out in the best in all of them.

"Every race is just really, really competitive," Powell said. "So you just have to be at your best every single time. Having dudes like Simon (Barnes) and Gabe and all of them just helps me run faster."

The 100 saw five total make it out with Shin (10.90) and Edgewood sophomore William Hosey (10.92) also getting out. South's Barnes (seventh in the 100 in 11.11) was a second place finisher in the 200 in a career best 21.83.

"Gabe's been running with such confidence," Williams said. "They had to go hard last week, now, they had to come and do it twice in each race. That's what I was watching was the endurance part of it, four really fast races in two hours time. I thought they did a tremendous job with that.

"For Simon, not making standard in the 100, I really proud of him to come back and stay controlled in what he did."

North's Landon McAllister, Brayden Johnson, Powell and Shin were second in the 4x100 in a season best 42.49 while Edgewood is sending a team to state for the first time since 2007. Three sophomores and a freshman (Brody Day, Jaden Lucas, Daylin Pairitz and Hosey) went 43.85, edging Charlestown by .04 with a last-second lean by Hosey.

"The best part about it is, we're young," Edgewood coach David Whittemore said. "Just to get there and be a part of it and feel that setting."

Banks back on top (and over 16 feet)

It was a little more of a bittersweet meet than South junior Arthur Banks had counted on.

He was happy to get back to the 16-foot mark again, standing atop the pole vault field by 3½ feet. But he wasn't happy to see teammate Andrew Mathis unable to replicate his career best night from sectional and fall to sixth.

"Tonight was really good for him," Williams said. "I think the toughest part for him was separating himself from being a really good friend to Andrew Mathis. Andrew had a tough night and didn't make it out and I think it really affected Arthur early.

"You couldn't get a gauge on him. He was feeling bad for his teammate, which says a lot for him. But he put it together. He got on a bigger pole and made three really good attempts at 16-6. It's great practice for next week."

Banks' best this year is 16-3, a foot higher than last year, so he's not done climbing.

"It's nice. I'm feeling comfortable back at 16," Banks said. "I definitely have the height to go 16-6 so we'll where it takes me."

North's Hamidovic doubles up

North senior Adis Hamidovic was a state qualifier in the discus last year and made it back again with a 185-1 to win the regional title. But it's his work in shot put that is shining almost as brightly. He came up with a 56-7½ on his last throw to move from fourth to third.

"It's been great," Hamidovic said. "I've been struggling with injuries in shot. I threw 57 feet four or five meets ago, and then I kept hyper-extending my finger, so that messed things up.

"So I went up there, got a little bit fired up, got some competition going and 'bam.'"

He noted he had a near 200-footer in discus he fouled on, so he's going into state hot. Hamidovic is eager to prove himself at state after fouling on all three discus tosses last year and decided to stick to a more disciplined routine this year after school let out.

"I'm just not really happy with mid-tier effort in competition," Hamidovic said. "So honestly just thinking about improving and keeping it going. That's definitely motivated me last year fouling out last year. I want to be consistent and win."

Sophomore teammate Quinn Walters will be going up with him after a third place finish in discus (160-0), not far from his career best of 163-6.

Owen Valley's Hall leaps back to state

Owen Valley senior Noah Hall had a career best and school record high jump of 6-10 earlier this season, but his regional jump at 6-4 was one to remember, too. With three others over their height, Hall calmly snuck over on his last try and then made it over 6-5 and 6-6 to win the title.

"That was a little exhilarating," said Hall, who was eighth at state last year. "I have a fractured heel right now and I've been dealing with it since last year. I also sprained my ankle three weeks ago, same foot, my jumping foot."

"The last two meets, same problem, I was just jumping into the bar. So I just needed to take my step back, run through and that jump, I think you heard I said, 'Got it!' as I was going over. It felt so clean, I knew it was over."

BNL sends reps to finals

Bedford North Lawrence saw Luke Morris make it through with a third place finish in the 300 hurdles (40.50), to top teammate Driven Axsom by .01. Morris was sixth in the 110s in 15.84.

And in the shot put, Tripp Stahl had a 56-10¾ for second, but fell a mere six inches short of third in the discus (159-6).
