It's not just Monroe County where boys sprinters are picking up the pace in Indiana.
The whole state is getting in on the fun at this year's IHSAA state boys track meet at North Central High School in Indianapolis on Saturday, June 6.
There are 37 qualifiers in the 100 dash, the slowest going 10.93. Last year, only 19 qualified that fast. There are 16 under 10.8, including Bloomington South's Gabe Taylor (10.75). The times are a 10.54 and two 10.55s.
Similarly, in the 200, there are 26 under 22 seconds, including the seventh-seeded Taylor (school record 21.54). Last year, just 12 broke 22 at regional. And in the 300 hurdles, there are 19 under 39 sec. Last year, only 12. In the 110s, there are 15 under 14.4; last year, that number was just 9.

That speed extends to the relays, too. In the 4x100, 15 teams went under 42 last week. Last year, just five did that. In the 4x400, 12 went under 3:20. Again, last year only five matched that pace.
One of the top speedsters to watch is Franklin Central senior Rylen Hainje, who will run at Marian next year. He's the meet record holder in the 110 and 300 hurdles with times of 13.28 and 35.82. Hainje recently went under 13.1 in the prelims at regionals. He is the top seed there at 13.24 and lurking as a sixth seed in the 300s (38.06).
He's also looking to add the 4x400 relay record (3:13.66) to his resume, as the Flashes ran 3:13.54 last week. He's also on a 4x100 team that's a fourth seed at 41.37.
The IHSAA is taking advantage of North Central's 10-lane track to expand the field to the top 30 in each event, which meant call-ups were used to fill out each field where necessary.
The top 10 will make each final in races with prelims (100, 200, 100 hurdles), but only the top nine will still medal. The top two in each prelim advance; the next-best times will fill out the field. The 3,200 relay and 800 will be run in two sections.
The extra spots opened up a second chance for South's Noah Field in the shot put (14th seed) and Bedford North Lawrence's Tripp Stahl in discus (22nd seed).
Besides Hainje, another two-time winner returns in Westview's Noah Bontrager, who came within .07 of Futsum Zienasellassie's record in the 3,200 (8:51.15) and took the 1,600 in a state meet record 4:02.60, with Noblesville's Baylor Miller and North's Caelan D'Onofrio second and third and also back this year.
In the 800, North's Caleb Winders and Columbus North's Jace Works went 1-2 last year and look to be the two favorites again as the top seeds, with D'Onofrio an eighth seed but certainly in the mix as well.
In high jump, Jordan Randall of Warsaw went over 7-0 last year while in discus, Avon's Kaleb Rasheed, who went 191-10 last year, has his eyes on the 200 prize after a 198-5 at regional.
There are several other area top seeds to keep an eye on.
In pole vault, South's Arthur Banks is one of three who reached 16-0 last year, with the field led by Isaac Roman of Crown Point, who went 16-6 at regional and was last year's runner-up.
In the discus, North senior Adis Hamidovic is seeded fourth at 185-1 and has been as far as 189-11, six inches from the school record. He's seeded 11th in shot put.
In the 400, North school record holder James Bosco has the fourth-best time (47.97), which is only 0.6 off the top spot. He was 13th last year as a sophomore.

In the hurdles, North's Alan Hays is looking to move up in both races, seeded 11th in the 110s and 12th in the 300s. He's just off the school records in both events.
In the 4x800, North became the first to win three straight years in 2025 and has designs on a fourth straight, with Whiteland going 7:45.95 at regional.
And in high jump, Owen Valley's Noah Hall has been as high as 6-10 this year, a height that could put him in the top three. He went 6-6 last week and took three stabs at 7-0.
The state finals will again take place at North Central High School in Indianapolis, which is also hosting the girls' state tennis finals at the same time. Those attending the track meet are encouraged to enter the school property from the north off 86th Street. Reminder: The Unified State Meet, which will include Bedford North Lawrence, will begin at 11 a.m.

Gates open at 2 p.m. The meet will begin at 3 p.m. with pole vault, long jump, and discus, followed by high jump and shot put (after discus). The 3,200 relay finals start at 4:15, trials at 5 and opening ceremonies at 6:10.
