I wish the Suns could have signed Alize Johnson to a 10-day contract.

We've put a huge emphasis on targeting defenders and Bagley is reeeeally bad on D, I don't see us trying to get him.
I tend to believe athletic players can be coached to be better defenders in the right environment. Iv'e seen it happen many times. Just look how much Bookers D has improved over the last year to 18 months.

May not be able to do it in 3 or 4 months though, which is why I feel like if he was aquired you would need to commit to resigning him to get the value out of him.

The Suns wouldn't even commit $4.7 million to keeping Smith and Bagley will cost minimally $14,762,308 next season as a RFA.

I'm only talking finances here because Bagley could well turn into a solid player.

I'd consider going after him in free agency, with one of our exemptions, but I don't think he is worth giving up anything of value.

He is inefficient on offense and terrible on defense, he has regressed since his rookie year.

I thought it would be interesting to look at the Suns roster as of today.

If Bismack Biyombo (10-day contract) is penciled into the 15th roster spot, the Suns have a full roster.

So if the Suns tweak their roster, it will likely have to be done by trade, waiver or buyout.

I'm not going to get further into 10-day contracts and two-way contracts. They can change.

Suns roster 1-3-2022:

Guards:

Chris Paul
Devin Booker
Cam Payne
Landry Shamet
Elfrid Payton

Forwards:

Mikal Bridges
Jae Crowder
Cam Johnson
Abdel Nader (Out)
Dario Saric (Out)

Centers:

Deandre Ayton
JaVale McGee
Jalen Smith
Frank Kaminsky (Out)

Open Spot:

Bismack Biyombo (pencil-in)

Looking at the above roster, forward appears to be the biggest need or BPA.

I'm thinking we need bigs in general when we play Milwaukee in the finals again. The biggest worry is guys fouling out against The Greek Freak. Monty needs to play some more minutes to the Biyambos, Kaminskies, and Smiths, to save the Mcgees and Aytons to do their things in the fourth quarter.

I like the Suns size at the center position but lately I've been thinking about matching up with the Warriors forwards like Otto Porter. They could use another forward sort of in the mold of Torrey Craig or Robert Covington.

I kinda this with Mikal, Cam, and even Crowder, we are looking good there.

I am just not sure about backup pg. I would like to see CamP playing better.

We aren't getting to the finals if we can't get past GS, and right now I don't think we can.

That's why I would prioritize upgrading our wings.

I think the Suns need another forward. Depth is very important. Possibly Stix can be added in the mix at power forward.

Also Payne/Payton could use an upgrade or at least an insurance policy.

If Bridges was actually playing to his potential we’d be much more comfortable. But his offensive disappearing acts have hurt us.
Like most defensive specialists, you usually don't get much offensive output from them when they have a tough assignment. I know Mikal's offensive struggles aren't so easily dismissed, but it's a factor.

I looked through some unsigned guys this morning, really slim pickings. If anything it has to be done via trade.

Just need to find a way to get Torrey Craig back and sign Biyombo. Rematch with the Bucks with big reinforcements to cancel out Portis and slow down Giannis

Cut Nader or Stix. I know some would be against cutting Stix but if we signed Biyombo for the remainder of the season, I don't have a problem with it to free up a roster spot for a wing. We shot ourselves in the foot when we declined his option and even with his improved play, I can't see him getting minutes ahead of anyone else come playoff time.

As for Nader, his deal next year isn't guaranteed.

So Bismack Biyombo fills the Suns final open roster spot. They can still do a trade.

As I understand it, Friday is the league-wide contract guarantee date. There may be some interesting players released.

The Suns do have an open two-way spot with the waiving of Chandler Hutchison.

It's an easy call, he's the kind of player we were hoping to be fortunate enough to get at the deadline.

It was a no brainer after watching Bismack play.

IMO, the Suns might still want to tweak the roster via trade. Another forward or point guard/combo guard might help match up with the Warriors better.

I think we get by them by attacking their weakness, defense in the paint. Make them pack it in so our shooters can take advantage.

I think the best trade with minimal loss is the Stix for Thad.

Another 3 and D guy like Covington from the blazers would be good insurance. But he makes too much. I don’t see too much from the rockets that we would like. I’m sure the Kings and pretty Ca aren’t trading with us.
