believes the Cardinals should trade Josh Sweat this offseason.

"The Cardinals have almost no chance of contending this season...But they have a chance to turn a player who had 12 sacks last season into a significant 2027 draft pick."

If I had any faith in the person making the picks, I might feel differently about this.

There are good veteran options out there in free agency for teams who feel like they need a little juice.

If you add together all the edge players Monti has signed besides Sweat, you have 18.5 sacks across three seasons.

It’s an utter wonder Monti still has a job.

The thing is, even with the best talent evaluators, theres still no guarantee a highly touted recruit is going to be successful in the NFL. Surely, theres a sweet spot to trade a valueable player before the inevitable decline. But this team desperately needs talent right now. Like, RIGHT NOW.

Yes at the trade deadline if we are unlikely to be in contention is when I think you do it.

We still need him next year for a for real for real rebuild and for a couple years after that if we hope to be competitive.

Otherwise maybe some team will be desperate and overpay for him for a playoff push.

I'd be surprised if the brass thinks we have a realistic shot at the playoffs this year. Of course that's not the mentality and it shouldn't be, but it's the truth.

One win wouldn't specifically, unless we are talking about Peyton Manning/Ryan Leaf type deal. How is Caleb/Stroud working out now?

Speaking of...Cards were right there at #2 that year. Would anyone give up a win or two to draft Peyton Manning (if we would even)? How different would those franchises be if Colts/Chargers picks were swapped? That's a fun what if, with Brees, Rivers, etc.

We had a #1 pick and got Kyler, imagine if Burrow was there instead. Oh well. Not all drafts are created equal.

Have to get lucky at the right time, but you still have to have competence up top to build/sustain.

However, I would rather sell the #1 pick and grab the "2nd" or "3rd" best in a "loaded" QB draft.
Interesting you mention stroud...I saw an article today that has Houston in the hunt for a QB in next years draft...seems some think once the rookie sensation thing wore off stroud fell to earth pretty hard and isnt going to reach the potential many had him pegged for.

yup, they sure do!!!!

why field good players now when we can push that barrel down the road for a chance to have a good player two years from now??!!?

I mean yeehaw right??

I know Im old school,...I dinosaur...obsolete...

but way back when I was coaching a team...the players had psyches...and you could affect those psyches either positively or negatively by how you managed the team.
you pull a guy out for 4th and 2 and put in his sub and even the most positive players would be mumbling, "aw man coach...why you wanna put THIS guy in?? we need Bubba if we are gonna make this stop..."
of course they would buck up and go play... but you can see the change in effort...like they already knew we were not gonna get the stop...

dont even get me started on the fans/parents in the stands...a coach that makes those decisions learns right away to bum a ride to the game...or park down the block.

players know when they are outmatched...and they know when they are being set up for failure...
funny thing is...if they are outmatched just because they are..most players will give a little more to help make up the difference...
but if they are outmatched because their leadership keeps getting rid of their best chances to make a play or get a win.... they learn right away that check cashes just the same with a mailed in performance...cause fudge it, if the staff dont want to win why should they invest heart/soul/knees into winning??

so yeah....trade away the guy who is the best player in our front seven right now...the rookies will make up the difference.

different story if the dude is spreading negative vibes and dragging down the locker room.. but if he is showing up and putting in the effort every day...theres no way you make that trade...at some point you have to send a clear message to the guys on the field that you want to win.

We're gunna suck and he is a good player but no cornerstone.

IMO, the only way the Josh Sweat era matters in a couple years if we can extract value by trading him.
in the standings?? Yeah,..your probably right.
But to the players? It matters now...to the fans in the stands,..it matters now...
and it may well affect the record in a couple years due to the message it sends to the league...and whether or not good players will even want to come here...why would they?? If we have already made it clear that winning is not a priority...that putting the best team oon the field, is not a priority??

Meh, give him an offensive line and then get back to me.

You trade Sweat if you’re trying to assure losing more games thus getting higher 2027 picks, plus maybe adding one.

Of course he was a sensation his rookie year, it screwed the Cards in the draft. Typical Cards luck.

If Sweat wanted to be here, I agree, but I get the impression he’s rather ambivalent.

I can't for the life of me think of a good reason to trade away Sweat! Forget about draft picks! These are never guaranteed to work out anyway. Why not keep the guy since he is under contract for 3 more years.

He could be a cornerstone for the defense for a couple of years. If we aren't going out there to compete, then this team is dead. Forget about 2027, 2028, 2029, 2030. Where does it stop!

Most likely, 6 feet under...but being a cards fan, I'll probably only get 1 to 2 feet under.

Hahahahah, I wonder what the over/under is on that?? LMAO
