METAIRIE, La. (WGNO) – Tyler Shough is entering his first full year as the Saints QB1.
The former second round draft pick only starts nine games, during his rookie campaign, and although the Louisville alum has a laundry list of areas he wants to improve in, the Black and Gold veterans see leadership as the main area where the quarterback is stepping up.
“The biggest jump that you can see right now is his leadership: His command of the huddle, his command of the offense, his confidence to stand up in front of the whole team and break down the huddle. That’s been a major jump, and that’s what you need out of your general on the field,” safety Justin Reid said.
“He’s gotten comfortable standing up in front of everybody: Talking, demanding what he wants, and I think that comes from him and Kellen being on the same page; Kellen giving him a little bit more rein to say ‘look, this is your team. Go ahead and take over.’ Year two, I always tell people the years don’t matter. It’s who respects who. The team respects Tyler,” running back Alvin Kamara added.
One way the second-year signal caller is taking over is by by taking a page out of the notebook of a former Saints quarterback Drew Brees.
Just like his predecessor, Shough takes the Saints wide receivers to San Diego, California, this offseason, and their time on the West Coast is another building block for the offense.
“It was awesome, so much fun. I think it was so worth it, just spending time with each other. I got to spend a week with Juwan, and our whole families living with each other every single hour, every day. It’s irreplaceable. We’re out there with all the guys, working out, having fun, and that was kind of one of the biggest takeaways I got from Drew was this is kind of where the magic happens,” Shough explained.
The Black and Gold have now wrapped up day one of training camp to begin a weeks-long haul to prepare for the 2026 season, and everybody from the head coach down to second-year players are confident in what their quarterback can do.
“Just as we go through this installation process, we just got to keep getting better and find completions. Play really smart football, and also still at the same time, test yourself, get out your comfort zone, and that’ll be good,” the head coach finished.
