Since QB Tyler Shough became the New Orleans Saints' starter, so much hype has been built for the young player. The franchise clearly saw enough from Shough and had no choice but to go into 2026 with him as the starter. That's one of the main reasons the Saints also invested so heavily in the offense this offseason. They need to get an answer this year on whether Shough will be the franchise QB moving forward and whether the Saints can trust him. Looking at the roster on paper, there really isn't anything that stands out on offense that could give Shough an "out" if things go wrong. Obviously, injuries can occur, but for now, the ball is in Shough's hands.

The Saints have been looking for a QB to take over their franchise since 2021, when NFL Legend Drew Brees retired from the NFL. Players have tried to take over the mantle left by Brees, but even when no one expected them to be at Brees' level, they still couldn't solidify that position for the Saints. But with Shough now in the starting spot, there is hope that the second-round QB can fix that position for New Orleans, and he has the backing of Brees.
In an exclusive interview with Covers' DJ Siddiqi, Brees revealed his views on Shough so far and how much impact he had on the Saints' winning ways to end the 2025/26 season:
"'Ive been really impressed with him, I talked to him around the draft last year, at training camp, during the season and right before he took over. To watch that team come together - in a lot of ways it was a new offense with Kellen Moore, it was a new defense with Brandon Staley - but man, they really hit their stride at the end of the year, and in large part, the quarterback was playing well. Tyler, he's a big, strong athlete, mature beyond his years, plays with great poise. Strong arm. He can run the ball well, creates some versatility as an offense.”
Brees speaking so highly of Shough is something Saints fans should be excited for, and it seems there's real belief that the young QB could be the guy in New Orleans. The former Saints QB went on to talk about Shough's leadership being an important factor in his success and how the Saints have built the offense so he can succeed:
"I think he's got some natural leadership ability. The guys seem to gravitate to him. And now in his second year in the offense, you add a weapon like Jordyn Tyson to go along with (Chris) Olave and some of the other guys that they have — Juwan Johnson, Alvin Kamara's coming back, and you go out and sign Travis Etienne."
“You’ve got some weapons and guys to spread the ball to that are real playmakers. But it's all about the guy pulling the trigger making great decisions and putting everybody in positions to succeed."
As I mentioned earlier, the offense has been built for Shough to succeed, and unless some major injuries occur, the pressure will be on the young QB. But pressure makes diamonds, and hopefully Shough can come out of this as the franchise QB.
