The Los Angeles Dodgers and Chicago Cubs are in the midst of a closely watched series at Wrigley Field. A major reason for that is the ongoing MVP battle between Shohei Ohtani and Pete Crow-Armstrong. On Wednesday, both teams clashed, with Ohtani and Crow-Armstrong setting the tone with leadoff homers.

Ultimately, the Cubs eked out a 7-6 win and handed the Dodgers their sixth straight loss.

After the game, Ohtani was asked his thoughts about Crow-Armstrong. He heaped praise on him while keeping a laser focus on other pressing matters, per SportsNet LA.

“He’s a great player, but I’m really focused on myself right now on the hitting side of things, and I’m really working towards hopefully getting back on the mound” Ohtani said.

“It’s still a little too far away to think about that.”

Ohtani is overcoming a recent knee injury that kept him off the pitching rotation. President of Baseball Operations Andrew Friedman expects Ohtani to return to pitching soon. Meanwhile, Crow-Armstrong has been on a hot streak. He went 3-for-5 on Wednesday, including 2 home runs and 4 RBIs. Additionally, Crow-Armstrong became the first Cubs player with consecutive 25 HR and 25 SB seasons. All the while enhancing Crow-Armstrong’s status as an MVP frontrunner.

Ohtani finished the game on Wednesday going 3-for-5 with 3 hits, 2 home runs, and 3 RBIs. He is batting .297 with 120 hits, 26 home runs, and 70 RBIs. Conversely, Crow-Armstrong is batting .288 with 124 hits, 26 home runs, and 69 RBIs.

Ohtani has won the last three NL MVP Awards, but Crow-Armstrong has emerged as a fiery and exciting young talent.
