Sheffield United Set to Say Goodbye to Star As Blades Intensify Talks For Former Fan Favourite
Sheffield United have agreed a deal with Coventry City for the transfer of Gustavo Hamer, bringing an end to the Dutchman’s three-year spell at Bramall Lane.
The midfielder is set to return to Coventry in a deal worth £6 million plus add-ons, with a medical scheduled to take place today as the transfer moves towards completion, per Sky Sports. The Blades are now preparing to lose one of the most influential attacking players in their squad just days before the start of their Championship campaign.
Hamer missed Sheffield United’s trip to Mansfield Town in the EFL Cup on Sunday afternoon, with his absence immediately raising further questions over his future. United, however, were able to put his omission to one side as they made the short journey to Nottinghamshire and secured an impressive 3-0 victory.
The result ensured that Chris Wilder’s side progressed, but attention away from the pitch quickly turned towards Hamer and his increasingly likely departure. Now, a deal has been agreed that will see the 29-year-old head back to Coventry, where he previously established himself as one of the Championship’s most exciting midfielders.
A Huge Void to Fill
For Sheffield United, replacing Hamer will be no straightforward task. During his three seasons at Bramall Lane, the Dutchman has more than justified the price tag the Blades paid to bring him to South Yorkshire in 2023. Across all competitions, Hamer has scored 21 goals and registered 26 assists for United, giving him a remarkable total of 47 goal involvements during his time at the club.
Hamer has consistently been the player capable of making something happen when Sheffield United needed inspiration. His ability to carry the ball, pick passes between the lines, deliver from set pieces and arrive in dangerous areas made him one of the side’s most important creative outlets.
Players capable of consistently producing both goals and assists are difficult to find in the Championship, and the timing of his departure makes the situation even more challenging.
Wilder’s side are just days away from their Championship opener against Birmingham City, meaning the Blades now have very little time to identify and secure a suitable replacement.
The £6m fee, plus potential add-ons, will at least provide United with funds to reinvest in the squad. But finding a player capable of immediately replicating Hamer’s production will be one of the biggest challenges facing the club during the final stages of the transfer window.
Souttar Pursuit Gathers Pace
Interestingly, Sheffield United could also be preparing to welcome back a former fan favourite as they say goodbye to another.
According to Pete O’Rourke, the Blades have made a new and improved bid in the region of £8 million for Leicester City and Australia defender Harry Souttar. The centre-back remains a major target for Wilder as United look to strengthen their defensive options ahead of the new campaign.
There had been concern among supporters over the possibility of a deal after Souttar started Leicester’s EFL Cup tie against Northampton Town at the King Power Stadium on Saturday. The Australian completed the game as the Foxes secured a narrow 1-0 victory, something which appeared to suggest Leicester were not yet ready to sanction his departure. However, United’s renewed offer could change the situation.
The acceleration of Hamer’s transfer to Coventry appears to have coincided with Sheffield United stepping up their pursuit of Souttar, with the club seemingly determined to get a deal over the line before the transfer window closes.
Souttar is a player who already knows Bramall Lane well, having spent the first half of the 2024/25 season on loan with the Blades. His physical presence, aerial ability and composure in possession would give Wilder another imposing option at the heart of his defence.
With the Championship opener against Birmingham City now just around the corner, United cannot afford to sit still.
Hamer’s imminent departure leaves a major creative hole in the squad, but the club’s willingness to accelerate their pursuit of Souttar suggests there could be plenty more movement before the window shuts as they look to steady the defence, which was incredibly leaky last term.
