Blades Eyeing Move For Highly-rated Defender; Competition is Fierce

Sheffield United are exploring the possibility of bringing Harry Souttar back to Bramall Lane this summer, with the Australian defender expected to leave Leicester City before the Foxes depart for their pre-season training camp in Spain.

The Blades are among the leading contenders for Souttar’s signature, alongside fellow Championship sides Stoke City and Wrexham, as per Pablo Oliveira. As Leicester prepare for life in League One following a disastrous second successive relegation, the club are expected to oversee a significant squad overhaul, creating opportunities for clubs across the Championship to strengthen with proven talent.

Despite remaining under contract at the King Power Stadium until the summer of 2028, Souttar’s future appears increasingly uncertain. Leicester’s financial situation and the need to trim both the size of the squad and their wage bill could see a number of senior players moved on before the transfer window closes. That scenario has alerted several clubs, but Sheffield United’s interest is particularly noteworthy given Souttar’s outstanding impact during his previous spell at Bramall Lane.

The towering Australian international enjoyed an exceptional loan spell with the Blades during the 2024/25 season before suffering a devastating Achilles injury that prematurely ended his campaign. Across his 20 league starts, the 6ft6 centre-back helped United keep an impressive 13 clean sheets, providing a commanding presence at the heart of the defence. His dominance in the air, calmness in possession and ability to organise the back line quickly made him a fan favourite, with many supporters viewing him as arguably the best centre-back in the Championship during that period.

While his injury was a cruel end to what had been an outstanding campaign, Souttar’s performances left a lasting impression on those at Bramall Lane, and it is no surprise that the club are now considering a move to bring him back permanently.

Harry Souttar is the Standout Centre-back Option For Sheffield United​

The Blades are expected to strengthen their defensive options this summer, and Souttar’s profile fits exactly what Chris Wilder is looking to add to his squad ahead of another promotion push.

Not only would he provide significant physicality and aerial dominance, but he would also offer valuable Championship experience and an understanding of the demands and expectations at Bramall Lane. Having already settled into the dressing room and built strong relationships within the club, Souttar would require very little adaptation if he were to return.

His attributes could also complement the likely arrival of Millwall defender Japhet Tanganga. While Tanganga brings athleticism, recovery pace and aggression in one-on-one situations, Souttar offers composure, aerial superiority and excellent positional awareness. Together, they would have the potential to form one of the strongest central defensive partnerships in the Championship.

Compared to the current options available to Wilder, Souttar arguably offers a more natural balance alongside Tanganga. His ability to dominate both penalty areas would provide United with an added threat from set-pieces while also improving their resilience in their box, something they massively struggled with last term.

Blades Face Competition For Souttar’s Signature​

However, Stoke City retain strong connections with Souttar following his successful spell at the bet365 Stadium, where he developed into one of the Championship’s most highly-rated defenders before earning his move to Leicester. A return to familiar surroundings could appeal to both player and club as Stoke continue rebuilding their squad.

Meanwhile, Wrexham’s remarkable rise under the ownership of Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney has enabled them to compete for players who may previously have been beyond their reach. Having secured their Championship status for the second season running, the Welsh club are eager to continue investing in experienced talent capable of challenging near the top of the division.

Nevertheless, Sheffield United may hold an important advantage. Souttar’s previous experience at Bramall Lane under Chris Wilder, combined with the affection shown towards him by supporters throughout his loan spell, could make a return an attractive proposition.

Few players settle into a club as seamlessly as the Australian did, and there remains a strong belief among many supporters that his injury robbed both the player and the club of an even more memorable campaign.
