Becoming a household name with back-to-back MVP awards and a championship ring, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has switched things up in a basketball-adjacent business. The 27-year-old announced on Tuesday that he has signed with Nike and left Converse.
Gilgeous-Alexander had his first signature shoe — SHAI 001 — under Converse's roof. He signed with the shoe company in 2020. In the six years since then, he went from an intriguing young player to an all-time great who continues to pencil his name next to hoop pantheons like Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant.
It didn't take long for Gilgeous-Alexander's move to Nike to go from rumor to official. He initially teased it on his Instagram story, where his Converse signature logo twirled so fast that it morphed into two iconic Nike swishes. Not even a couple of hours later, the move was officially announced.
Of course, Converse is owned by Nike. So it's not a traditional shoe company to shoe company move. Gilgeous-Alexander will now have the basketball sneaker conglomerate back up his brand and style at the peak of his scoring powers.
"We are thrilled to welcome Shai Gilgeous-Alexander to the Nike Basketball signature family," Nike wrote in a statement. "Coming after back-to-back MVP seasons, we are excited to build on Shai's incredible impact with Converse as one of the most creative leaders in the game."
The move makes sense for both parties. Gilgeous-Alexander is one of the faces of this era in the NBA. And with Nike's other big names on the wrong side of 30 in LeBron James, Kevin Durant and Giannis Antetokounmpo, the company could use a fresh face to carry the baton.
